Well if your UCA is resting on the body you should gain probably at least about 1/2" clearance I would say by cutting a hole. If you look on the first pic you can see there are 2 layers you need to cut through. I would guess between the 2 layers is about 1/4" to 1/2" spacing. I originally cut the bottom layer and it was still hitting. I eventually got around to drilling all the way through.

how do u go about figuring out where to cut? i'd like to do that circular hole better.
do u drill thru from the bottom up? or top down? id like to do it top down cuz it'd be easier

That's scary and please excuse my ignorance, but does that weaken the body in any way?

Top to bottom is the easiest. I'll post a picture of where to cut if you want, bu basic location is by the fuse box, the long skinny one by the battery( the middle mount of box. On the driver side it's th exact opposite lcation, somesensor is mounted right on top.

As for strucural integrity, it shouldn't effect anything. The stress is in the seams not the middle part.

O yeah if you use the circular saw jus be careful, it's not hard but if you mess up it's gonna look really jagged

The UCA's were banging so often and hit so hard I had indentations. That's what I used as my guide.

Also, make sure you use a powerful enough drill. My drill is kinda weak and I had to stop a few times. That's why the cut is not as clean as it could be.

I agree with the others that is a horrid cut and reduces the structural rigidity of the car.
Get a hole saw like mentioned . It is easy use the part that gets hit with the arm as a guide from under , then use a punch to center the drill then drill that hole up.
After the hole is made use it as a guide and drill with the hole saw down as it is much easier and you don;t even have to take the wheel off.
No real need to cover it as the hood liner seals it up.

With DR's advice, I also used a 2.5 hole saw.

It was fairly easy. I also used WD40 which helped the cutting.

nice thread Tomlee,

I've been on air for 2 years now. And I love to drive low. By doing this uca cutout, I'm sure it will allow me more clearance/suspension travel so I can drive low and remain comfortable.

Since the shape of the uca/balljoint is cylindrical, I may opt to use a circular saw too. props to dRo15 for sharing his pics.

Quick Reply: UCA Hole, finally did it.
