it really sound like your strut mount. just buy some full bodied coilovers and call it a day. alot of guys are selling good condition used ones here. Or get some new megan ones still cheaper than buying all the parts seprate. Just my 2 cents. and like I said find a new mechanic or pay one of your local Gotham guys they know what there doin.

I had my mech put my car up on the lift and after banging everything under there with a rubber mallet we found out that my left front brake caliper slide had a bunch of play in it. Needs a new bracket but for now a bunch of grease in it quieted the noise.

Lexus technical service bulletin SU005-002. rear strut mount. $12.00 part. Extremely difficult to see on the car unless you use a mirror inside the coil spring. When they installed the coil spring on the rear strut they sandwiched the spring with the rear bushing so now the spring is metal to metal with the strut tower since the insulator is deformed.

i had a similar problem, ended up replacing the ball joints (which needed to be done anyways cuz i have a 2000 and seen the pics in the suspension forum, Ouch...) and the noise went away and then boom, a week later, noise came back. took it to my mechanic and he told me it was the strut upper mount. he just put a socket to the top of the strut and turned it and it appeared to be skipping and told me that this was an indication that my upper mounts were bad. can anyone confirm this?

He is full of sheeet. Ofcourse the strut rod will turn, that is why they have the square part on top so you can hold it while loosening the nut. only way to tell is if you know where to look with a mirror inside the coil spring.

Please somebody listen to this guy... its the struts, the hat and bearing all are part of the front suspension. its macpherson strut in front so the bearings wear out and cause a clunking noise.

Noise still there but took the car to the mechanic this morning. Strusts and strut mounts. He also just said he put in some strut bars or something and syas the noise is completely gone. Set me back 755bucks!!! Gotta drive it for myself to believe it though. Two years of suffering this horrible noise!

we'll report back tonight...

I don't know if this is the same thing, but out of the blue, my car just started making this noise when I turn. Its like a metal to metal scraping noise, best way I can put it. It comes and goes. I took it to 4 different mechanics and all said nothing seemed wrong. One of them put wd 40 on the ball joints and that made it go away for a while but now it comes back occasionally. I know for sure its not the power steering. Any idea what it could be?

You were right.

To the desbelief of my ears, the noise is gone. I can't believe it myself but i look forward to trying to find it again tomorrow.

The mechanic showed me the old struts and the problem was obvious. The old ones had no rebound at all. When pressed down, they would just not bounce back. They would go up in slow motion. He also threw in a sway bar and bushings. Expensive as hell but there's nothing more irritating than a constant rattle.

Now i need an alignment and two new tires. I wanna get the original Firestones (the fat looking ones). i'm stock on 16".
