Default Switched to full-synthetic with 111K miles!

After a lot of research I made the switch. I got an oil change about a month ago and told my mechanic I wanted to switch to synethic. The office person said they have partial synthetic that they were going to put in there. I felt even better because the transistion would be less drastic for a car of my mileage. Low and behold when I picked the car up she made a mistake and it was full synthetic. I drove it home and for the next week or so the engine felt buttery smooth and was not leaking anything at all! This made me happy.

But for the first few weeks I noticed that my car felt a little laggy...almost like I put low-octane gas in it. Now a month later that laggy feeling is gone and it feels even a little peppier than before.

Next time I will use a really good grade full-synthetic like Mobil 1. The shop just used what they had on hand at the time which most likely wasn't the best.

Just thought I'd share my experience for those contemplating the switch. GL!

Goodluck, hopefully you will stay leak free... Please keep us updated if you start to leak.

Also, did you consider using an additive like MOA? Instead of switching to synthetic?

Thanks for sharing, I just recently bought a GS430 and the previous owner had oil changes done at the dealer with Pennzoil Synthetic blend, I've always used dino oil since i've had higher mileage cars.

I have been thinking about changing this car to full Syn since it's in such great shape and has been using a blend anyways.. For my first oil change i just stuck with Castrol Syn blend since i couldn't make up my mind, next time i think i'll switch to Castrol full synthetic.

Btw i've always heard that Mobil 1 is the thinnest Synthetic, and normally has more issues with higher mileage motors leaking oil..

Thats great to hear. With all the performance mods you have, I automatically assumed you ran full synthetic oil. I just went through the break in oil changes and now I switched to Eneos 0w-50. I've used the off the shelf synthetics before and I was happy with those but this Eneos oil made a drastic difference that I have never experienced with any other oil. I was shocked oil alone could do that.

Why anyone uses anything but Mobile 1 in a street car is beyond me. My 95 Escort has 220,000 on it and had synth since 55,000 and there is no blowby, no leaks, and it runs perfectly. Original engine.

My dad’s van which is not used anymore due to too many vehicles has 280,000 on it with no problems.

And I switched to Mobile 1 in my GS4 with 35,000 on it.

I attribute this to religious oil changes with 5w30 at 5,000 miles.

There is a reason Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette’s, Benz and many other car companies use this oil.

If it’s good enough for them, it’s definitely good enough for my junk.

There is no need to use amsoil, or royal purple or anything else...I'm sure they are great, or maybe a tad better, but you cannot beat the price of a 5 gallon jug at Walmart plus a Napa Gold Filter (made by Wix)

Don't wanna burst any bubbles... but Mobil 1 is not "fully synthetic", as it is made from conventional based oil. I am not saying it's not a good oil, in fact it is great, i just thought I'd add that its not EXACTLY what it says it is. The fact is that any oil you buy from any store will long exceed your needs for oil, maybe synthetic will last longer, but the fact is that our cars were built for oil that was produced around 2000, however there has been great advancement in this area, I use the cheapest stuff I can find.

You get what you pay for! In my GS its strictly Mobil 1 Synthetic period!! I would never use anything less. IMO using a regular cheap oil is like running on regular unleaded. Sure the car will run on it, But in the long run is it worth the problems and/or deterioration you may cause on the engine??

I do not mean to start the age old debate synthetic vs. conventional, but..... there's a difference, it is not like running on regular unleaded, as that has to do with compression ratio, detention, spark timing, etc., Do you understand why we use premium? Where as oil is only used for lubrication. Look at your On the other hand, yes synthetic will run in your car, but does it really not breakdown or collect dirt like conventional? Yes, synthetic does break down, and yes it does collect dirt like normal conventional, and yes it does need to be changed, if you change your oil when your supposed to, conventional or synthetic, it will prolong the life of the engine, it's just my opinion that it's a waste of money, that's all.

Glad you went to the synthetic side Rock...

Walmart has the 5qt mobil 1 for 22.00 pretty much all the time.. YOu can walk out of there under 30.00 with oil and filter..

Bought my `96 LS400 at 78K miles. Don't know what was used before then, but I've been using synthetic since. Up to close to 200K I used Mobil 1 10W-30 with no leaks or problems. I've switched to Penzoil Platinum Synthetic 10W-30 since then (218K miles); it got some positive press on this forum and is a little cheaper (at Walmart) than Mobil. No issues. Did the same with my`98 GS400 which I bought at 156K miles and now is up to 240K. I change it at ~5K miles and feel these cars will go to 300K+. I can't really say if synthetic is better, but it's not any worse and I'd rather spend a little more on oil changes than make a car payment.

I assumed you were synthetic as well. I am sure you will be ok. I switched to synthetic at 89K and now at 130k. I use mobil 1, and sometimes get a huge shipment of amsoil. When i run out of amsoil, i use mobil1.
