Want to buy a gs 400 but???
What aftermarket parts can i buy that make the biggest difference!
i was reading on a swift stage 2 intake with the ecu and motherboard
which says 30 to 40 horsepower , and same torque gain, i want to break into the 13 second range will the gs 400 do it with not that much modifications??
or is a bmw or mercedes a better bet?

BMW and Mercedes aren't as reliable and are expensive to fix.
There's quite a few options. Look around here a bit -- use the search feature to help. A torque converter, rear end gearing, intake/headers/exhaust/air-fuel controller... You'll get into the 13 second range pretty quick, man. You'll be in the 12s if you decide to go turbo/supercharger.

Thks for the reply
ok fellas im down to ,2 blk gs 4oo s 1999 both ,
on the aftermarket parts i dont want to put a stall on there and no gearing
i use to drag at the track and i hate stalls and gearing , i just want my ride
to have like a air intake system and maybe headers and exhaust hopefully
that will be enough ??? do you know anyone who has been able to accomplish this with those mods ???

From my understanding the 400s were a little more "raw" feeling, different steering, power delivery and shifting, a little lighter, at least compared to the later 2G cars, but with only 15 lb/ft tq diff. btwn the 2 I don't ever remember seeing huge differences btwn the cars.
There is a thread on here somewhere where a guy compared the 2 side by side.

I've got the swift with ecu upgrade on mine. 99 GS4 with 156k on it. Had it on the dyno the other day and AFR was great, barely choppy, but overall, all the way across it would not be worth monkeying with. Swift did a good job for an off the shelf piece. I never baselined the car before hand, but on a Mustang 1100SE dyne it did 246/237, the Mustangs read about 6-7% lower than the inflated DJ numbers. I would also imagine these cars have a good bit of drivetrain loss with their very smooth transmissions and heavy wheels/tires. The best pulls had to start at mid 3k range in manual mode and I ran it until the rev limit. My car is bone stock except for the swift/ecu and magnaflow mufflers only. The car has A LOT of intake noise at WOT, a nice idle with the exhaust, but no drone, so overall I wouldn't change a thing, I couldn't ask for something that fits my needs better.
I hope this helps.

Much Respect that you want to run with mods but the stock 98 GS400 runs 0-60 in under 6 seconds while still being more reliable than most cars on the road today. With the experience and knowledge from this forum guiding you, I'd expect nothing but greatness in your future.

I'd take the gs400 motor out and drop in the Ls1 or ls2 , have more fun with a car you love.
basic bolt ups from what what I seen don't do much. even with headers intake and exhaust you wont be in the 250+ whp . Norcal did a dyno day and showed alot of surprising numbers.
there is a turbo kit forsale in the sale section if you have 4500.00 and thats including fuel.

i have a 99gs 400 and i must say that is one good car. if i were u, id stop worrying about getting your car up to speed because it will bite you back later from emissions test to resale. you have a classic that has no difference with 430 of its age. u rather spend that money on making it look elegant and classy, thats what counts when u r out for fun. remember that u can pose all day without problems but cant speed all day without problems.we want you to stay alive and trust me, u will get tired of speeding soon. i did when i crashed my gs400. now it looks very elegant and ive stopped worrying about staying alive for the next day. if you want a faster car, buy a faster car. if u sell your 400, u will regret it because that is a classic lexus oem based performance and reliability icon.
