"sticky" sound coming from my GS300 engine
Just bought a 2000 GS300 with 156k (CANADIAN) and it's making this "sticky" sound.
Like the belts are sticky or something of that nature. It does go away when the car is fully warmed up.
What could it be? I'm new to Lexus' and not really sure. Car pulls strong and nothing really wrong, just this loud "sticky" sound.
Kind of like when your rolling a sticky ball tape on a flat surface.

I will find out exactly where it's coming from. It doesn't sound like a ticking sound.....
Sounds like that sticky sound say if you were to rip a piece of tape off the table.
If it was the crank pulley, how would that affect reliability or any other engine components? Are those expensive to replace?
Thinking of doing the 2JZGTE swap so I want to hold off on it as long as possible.

Does it sound like it's repetitive for awhile and then goes away? That's what my pulley was doing. Do you hear it at idle and in gear? It just loosened up and wore over time. I replaced it when my timing belt was due. Around 300 for the pulley. If it is the pulley I would have it replaced. My suggestion is to have a certified mechanic check it out. It could be alot of things.

Sounds like ripping off tape!!!!
Mine does something of that nature, but mine does it mostly when I hate the brakes. THe only thing my abs, vsc, vsc off light is on. I think it's because I have a bad sensor.

It does seem inconsistent and will definitely look into it.
If it costs more than $100+0 to fix with labour, I'll live with the sound until spring and do the 2JZGTE swap.

I believe I have found the problem.
It's either coming from the pulleys or the belt.
I sprayed WD-40 on the belts and the sound went away.
The belts don't seem cracked or anything though.
What could be causing this sound? It's more of like a high pitch sound, NOT the same screech like a slipping belt though.

When its really cold out the belts can lose traction for very breif moments...even with a good condition belt. It will cause a loud pop/click or snapping noise. When the belt actually squeals, thats the belt losing traction continuously and probably needing to be replaced. Snapping/popping noise just means the belt is slipping intermittently, usually just in very cold weather. Mine does the same thing, but it's because I have aluminum belt pullies. They tend to slip more than steel when the engine is cold. It clicks when cold and I have a brand new belt on my car.

I applied WD40 near the area and it goes away for a brief moment, but when I quickly spray a little bit on the Belts itself, the noise goes away 100%. I think i'll just buy a new belt and put it on myself.
Is your noise very loud as well?

Yeah mine is pretty loud in the mornings when it's like 30F outside. I have a brand new belt, but I also have aluminum pulleys on my car which tend to slip until they're warmed up. If it's only doing it in really cold weather, then just spray some belt conditioner on it and call it a day. If it's always doing it then just change out the belt. It doesn't cost much($20 range or so) and only takes a few minutes to change the belt out.

When belts get old, they start to harden. It only happens in small patches at first, but will eventually cover more of the belt.
When it warms up, it softens. That "sticky" noise is most likely the fanbelt with a hard patch slipping as the hard patch passes a pulley with a high resistance or the actual drive from the motor. The hard patch doesn't grip as well as the rest of the belt and slips for a brief moment.
That's what I think the noise your car is making. The reason the WD40 sorted it was because it helped to soften the hard part of the belt a bit. Some people also put motor oil on their belts for a temporary fix.
