Gs300 I want HID's but need help!
I'm interested in installing an HID kit in my 01 gs300 l-tuned version. I nearly bought a kit until I read about glare issues with installing HID's in OEM llight housings.
Has anyone installed HID's in their oem light housings on an 01 gs300?? I really do not want to go through the trouble of changing out the housings to projector style.
Any help is appreciated.

they are not projectors. Projectors have a convex piece of glass infront of the bulb to spread out the light and project it in a particular pattern. The gs300 uses a reflector housing to accomplish this (from what I understand about the different lamp)
You can retro in some projectors, or swap an entie housing to a gs300/400/430 housing that has hids, or change out the bowl in the lamp from your gs lamp to the bowl from a HID equiped lamp.
The last one would be most easliy accomplished a pick n pull junk yard if you are lucky enough to find a gs3/4 with HIDS that have no beened cannablized.
Easiest solution, find HID lamps for about $600 a pair on ebay and they are driect bolt in swap with only minimal wiring mod to connect to ballast.

i've got 15k's in my headlights, they are non projector and work just fine, i would suggest polishing the housing if it's gotten dirty though, so it's nice and clear.

We can help you with Retrofitting if that is your route, nothing beats a retrofit for output.
15k headlights is too colorful, great for show, not so much for daily driving. 4300k-6000k would be the most for daily driving.
Here's a retro we just finished for a customer: Q45 into 2GS

The 2GS comes in stock HID vs. stock Non-HID housings.
The stock HID housing was designed for its reflector bowl to create a nice cutoff line.
The stock Non-HID housing does not....and thus, installing an aftermarket HID kit in this housing will create glare to on-coming drivers.
With that being said...many members have done this....and manually adjusted the beam lower....and/or even added eyelids. I did both years ago....but has since gone with a projector type housing.

Just make sure you get a quality HID kit. I have the Xenon Depot kit for the headlights and fogs. I will eventually do the projectors for the cleaner cutoff, but the HIDs from Xenon Depot are awesome.

Re
Pete you mentioned some gen 2s have projector lenses. How can I tell if mine does?
Also someone mentioned pointing the bulbs if I decide to install in oem housing(assuming they are reflector style). It's my understanding the bulbs are plug n play. If that is the case, how do you aim them? Wouldn't they just twist in place?
To one of the comments above regarding color, after researching I'm really only interested in 4300, 5000 or maybe 6000k. I don't want it to be too blue or colorful and most of all I want to see better. I can't see a thing without the high beams on dark roads.

So for "proper" lighting modifications, here are your options.
1) Reflector swap - HID reflector into your headlight
This requires you to open up your headlights (I like the oven bake method), and unscrew your Halogen reflector and replace with HID reflector
2) HID Projector Retrofit - HID projector from another HID equipped vehicle into your headlight
This requires you to open up your headlights but this time using your HID projector of choice. Since the GS headlight is HUGE, you have a lot of options! Q45, LS430, LS460, FX-R, S2000, etc. We have special made brackets for Q45, LS430, and FX-R (coming soon) which make this job a breeze.
The costs associated with #1 is of course the cheapest, however for the amount of work you put into doing it, the output will still be "ok" at best.
#2 costs a bit more but by the time you are done, your headlights would blow away anyone with halogen reflectors anytime of the day.
As for color of the bulbs, just pay attention to those colorful HID kits on the road and look at the amount of output it shoots to the ground. It's not much. Kinda cool to look at, but that's about it. Does nothing for you other than make you stand out from the crowd.
Sticking in the color temperature range of 4300k to 6k at most would yield you the best output on the floor and make it easy on your eyes for long driving periods.
