Default GS300 starting trouble

Hi All,

I have a 1999 Lexus GS 300 with about 129K miles on it. After I bought it home from an Oil Change at local Firestone, it started giving me this problem. The car does not start in the morning and I have to do the following: Put the key and turn all the way but not crank. wait for about 1 minute and then crank. 2 days ago it was very cold so in addition to waiting for one minute I had to put my foot on the gas for it to start. Once it starts then it runs fine all day (unless it sits idle for 6-7 hours). I put in a new battery 2 months ago, so that is not the issue.

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I'm wondering if it has to do with the chip in the key like it takes a second for it to communicate with the car. Pressing the gas down doesnt do anything since fuel pump works electronically with the ignition (unless the GS is different) so I say that was just coincidence... Do you have another key to try, has the key been violently dropped or something? again its just a shot in the dark.

Oh yea um. When you initially put the key in and turn it (without waiting that minuet), what happens? Does the car crank over and over with no response, or does it just click or do nothing? answers to those questions can narrow it down to tune up or starter problems.

Could be fuel-related like you're losing fuel pressure. Any smoke spit from the exhaust when you have to keep your foot on the pedal to keep it running? If so, is it black smoke? You *could* have a leaky injector causing loss of fuel pressure in the fuel lines so your injectors can inject fuel. Keeping the key on can 'prime' the lines and create the pressure for you. A leaky injector can also cause one cylinder to run rich forcing the foot on the gas pedal thing to keep it running. Big give away is the smoke from the tail pipe, if any.

Good luck!

Hi Jokester, TWong1200 and BigXDaddy,
Thanks for all your replied. To answer your questions:

1. The car does not crank (as in the video from BigXDaddy) it just is silent....until I wait for minute...

2. No check engine lights.....

3. No smoke from tail pipe either....I used to live in Chicago until 3 months ago and the car started there with no problems...I recently moved to Dallas and the weather is not that cold there as compared to Chicago.

4. I was planning to go the local PepBoys and they said that they need to run a diagnostic test for 89.99. They also estimated that the Fuel pump and Fuel replacement will cost me around 600.

Any thoughts? Thanks Guys!

Have someone get in car to turn key on, not start engine. Another person stands by the gas cap with cap off and puts their ear up to it. When person in car turns key, listen for fuel pump prime sound - like a click, hiss, click very short like 1 second. That will at least tell you if the pump is priming. If you do not hear this, then you will have to check out the wires to the pump to see if it's getting juice. Take out the rear seat to access this crap. Also, if it ever leaves you stranded, you can try kicking the fuel tank (if it's the pump).

The video by BigXDaddy is cranking just fine. It's just not starting. If yours is dead silent and nothing occurring, it could be a bad battery terminal or ground from the battery to the chassis. Could also be a bad starter. If your car sounds EXACTLY like the one in the video, then it cranking and turning over just fine.

does your lights go dim? if they dim a lot it means your battery is dead.

if they do not dim and all you hear is clicking sound, it is your starter.

dead battery could also mean a dead alternator; you should get it tested.
