Default 300 vs 400/430 fuel consumption

The specs for these engines give about the same fuel economy. How V8 is the same (or very similar) to V6? Why would anyone get V6? The difference is very insignificant 18/23 vs 18/25 mpg.

http://autos.msn.com/research/vip/Sp...l=GS&trimid=-1

What is real life fuel consumption? Owners please what is your fuel economy for 300 or 400/430.

Thanks...

Well first off, It's an Inline 6, not a V6. The reason why they are the same, however I think observed is a little different than what manufactures post. My theory about them being even is that the V8 obviously uses more gas than the I6, however the V8 has to work less hard to move the weight of the vehicles. It really depends on how you drive. I personally own a 430, I have gotten anywhere from 14 mpg to 23-4 mpg... I have never gotten <14 or >25mpg, but I came from a GMC Envoy with 22" rims, where I never got over 17, I couldn't be happier with the GS as far as consumption having had a V8, If I had to do it again, I would get the 2J and pimp it out, screw MPG.

well. the I6 engine is actually heavier than the v8. it uses iron block vs the all aluminum block v8.

True that it is iron vs aluminum but the v8 is actually heavier. Not by much if you can call it much.

Back in 2004 Rod Millen and Foose did an IS430. Yes IS430 I feel this could have been the true inspiration for the ISF. (IMO)

The total is about 2lbs difference but yes agreed aluminum is definitely the way to go.

check it out.

Simple physics.
Both cars weight the same, both cars have the wind drag. If driven the same, then the same amount of energy is used. But it really pushed the V8 has more potential to use more energy and therefore more gas.

I have made this argument to many people, I even bumped into a guy in a parking lot once with a GS300, and the very first thing he said to me was "The only difference between our cars it I get better gas mileage" to which I responded "no, we get the same gas mileage, meaning the only true difference between our cars is about 100 hp."

Owned.

Differences shouldnt be to much.. maybe 1 mile off but thats it. My best was 23.5 mpg going 80 with AC Blasting and fully loaded car with stuff in the trunk...

The reason it gets similar mileage is because the GS4 has a 3.24 rear end, while the GS3 has a 3.92. If you put that same 3.24 rear end on a GS3 then the gas mileage would be phenomenal, but the acceleration would not be lol

I was actually thinking about doing that, a GS3 with 3.24 gears and a retune. See whats the best gas mileage I could get out of a GS3 heh.

hmmm...i'm totally a newb JeffTsai...but what do you mean by 3.24 and 3.92? Is it possible to change out certain parts to get better mileage with a 400?

I saw that show on cable a few months ago - - frickin' awesome how they took the 430 engine and put it in an IS and changed it to manual tranny!

Truthfully the gas mileage on my car is not that bad. I drive like an idiot in town and average somewhere around 19MPG. On the highway I can push 27MPG or sometimes even 29-30.

I brought this up a while ago because it seemed like the 430 guys really do get similar mileage but then I see a whole thread of 430 owners saying they can't get better than 14MPG in the city and 22MPG on the highway.

A lot of it has to do with how well you maintain your car and how you drive.
