My GS tried to kill me...
Had a really scary incident with my GS today. I have had a similar incident with it before but it went away really fast the last 2 times, but this time was rediculious. This is what happens apparently during spirited driving in manual mode sometimes after I let off the gas the car doesnt stop accelerating. Even if I switch back to auto it still accelerates. It has happened twice before and has gone away after a couple seconds. Today it wouldnt stop.
My friend just got e85 on his evo9 and I wanted to see what it had so we were doing a little spirited driving. I went into 2nd in the M mode and after i hit the redline i switched over to auto so it would start shifting on its own. Luckly it was a pretty empty open road but after he destroyed me I let off the gas the car wouldnt stop accelerating. Luckly I had a decent distance so it HOPEFULLY would start acting normal. I was in auto flipped it back to manual and then back to auto, it kept accelerating. I flipped it into neutral, the rpms kept rising. I flip it back and forth between M and Auto a few more times but im quickly runing out of time. I start braking and its fighting me the whole time. Me and my friend are taking a turn i pull up behind him and am finally at a stop but the car is still TRYING to accelerate. I am slamming on the brake and my brakes are smoking right now really bad. I slam it into park and turn off the car. Turn it back on a second later and its back to normal.
Scared the crap outa me. Luckly I kinda knew what was going on. This has never happened when I get on it and leave it in auto. It doesnt happen if im in manual and drive it slowly. To me it feels electronic. The pedal wasnt stuck under the mat either. No CEL
Anyone have any Idea what this could be? Its a GS400 btw.

LOL thats some fix. No it isnt the mat. It is very specific how it happens. Id like to test it out more if I felt like my car wasnt destroying itself everytime it happens. I mean its the engine fighting the brakes. That cant be good.

Maybe you need to replace the APP(accelerator pedal position) sensor. It could possibly be damaged, but not enough for the computer to register it as a fault. I would suggest you get that replaced/fixed asap. You might not be as lucky next time where you have enough road to react.

You have any idea how much this sensor costs? I feel like its a combo between that and possibly the comp getting confused by my manual to auto shift instead of doing it with the paddles. But arent the 400s drive by cable? Wouldnt a AAP only be in the DBW?

Well when I was messing with my friend it was runing well. When I would let off the pedal completely it wouldnt accelerate like I was flooring it. It would accelerate at a steady rate but not as fast as possible.
The other weird thing is first time it happened it was a split second and I almost ran into the car infront of me than I slammed on the brakes. Second time a little longer. This time it wouldnt go away.

what year is your ride? 02's and up have a recall on lexus with bad electronic ....pedal.. or whatever i'd say take it to the the dealer but dont mention your fun racing/beating style driving there were a few cases like that here in houston!

My first thought was the mats. Its weird because I havent heard of this either. I think soon im gonna go look at the throttle cable the accelerator. Its just so weird that it requires me to push it hard in M for it to do that. Its a 2000

The GS4 and GS3 has what is called transition drive by wire. They have the pedal sensor at the throttle body, which also acts as a backup cable incase the sensor fails. It can revert to a throttle cable setup when there is a fault. In backup mode, the throttle cable can only pull open the throttle plate 15%. Basically, it's enough to limp you to the nearest gas station but not enough to get you up to highway speed. Starting with the GS430, they got rid of the throttle cable completely.
