i have the same problem with my 98 gs300...

when i purchased my gs i noticed that the light that indicates the gear my vehicle is on was actually off, after a while of driving it would come on. i drove the car like this for a few days before my check engine light came on.

i had my friend at the local lexus dealer check the code for me, and it came up with a bad or dirty neutral safety switch/back up light switch.

i still haven't replaced the sensor, so once in a while my car gets stuck on park. When this happens i notice that the light on the cluster for the gears is always off. What i do is i wiggle the shifter until the light comes on then i step on the brake, i hear the click then it comes out of park.

i haven't gotten the time to replace this part, but i got quoted around $250 for the sensor at the dealership. i ended up buying the sensor for around $150 at my local kragen.
