Default Is Ethanol Bad?

I was looking for opinions on ethanol being bad. I have the option of 93 octane w/10% ethanol or 91 octane w/no ethanol. Which is a better choice for my GS4?

Depends on what kind of driving you do, how often you fill up, etc.

If mileage is important, the non-blend will perform better. If you don't drive or fill up often, the non-blend is better.

If you are a corn farmer, then the 10% Ethanol is better.

In general the non-blend stuff is what you want to get. You get more miles per gal out of it. Ethanol requires roughly 20-30% more fuel to travel the same distance. If you have a tank full of gasoline you can go 300 miles. If it's a tank of 100% (E100) ethanol then you can probably only make it about 220 miles or so. E85 you can probably make it around 240 miles that fillup. E10 will probably yield you around 285. The upside of running an ethanol blend is that the octane rating is slightly higher. E100 and E85 blends net around 110-106 octane. It's almost like running race gas for less cost than 87 octane, this is what I used in my own car. However, if your car is stock then I'd just stick with the full gasoline with no blend for maximum fuel economy. Some states do not have this option and mandate every pump sell E10 fuel. So if you have the option of picking which one then go with the non blend to get the most miles for your money.

Here in Canada, we have Shell 91 octane that has no ethanol.

A lot of car enthusiast choose this route even if it's not 93 octane because its more pure fuel and does get you more miles, compared with fuel that has 10% ethanol.

However, with no ethanol, IIRC the fuel burns more rich and not as clean or something.

Hmm...I guess I should get 91 octane next time. I've been thinking that my gas mileage is pretty low, unless it's my foot fault.

Filled up w/Phillips 66 91 octane (no ethanol) today. I think I will stick with it and ditch the Shell 93 octane 10% ethanol blend.

Hey, thats funny I was going to say I think the only store that doesn't add ethanol to the mixture is Phillips66, however it's like 30 cents more a gallon, Fuuuuuuuuck that.... Almost every single gas station in the Midwest runs anywhere from 10-15% depending on the season, the cold the weather, the more alcohol is added. If you actually read the pumps, it will actually tell you the approx. mixture. I really have never had a problem with the ethanol blend in my GS as long as it's 91-93 octane, they only have 91 octane in most of Wisconsin. I will add that our hotrods run on none ethanol fuel as they don't like the alcohol mixture as much, but for my DD, it's top tier gasoline for me.

I go out of my way to patronize gas stations that offer fuel without ethanol.
