Default painting over painted calipers

I need a little painting expertise here: my car came with the stock calipers painted red, and I was wondering if I gotta go and get some other expensive caliper paint to turn it back to silver or black?

Hoping I can just go and get some cheaper high temp paint and just go over it?

Do I need to do anything to prep like sanding it down a little to get the new paint to stick better?

thanks guys totally dig this site

You should be fine just spraying over the existing paint just make sure you clean them really good first.

On my Last SC, the previous owner had painted the calipers and they started flaking so i had to repaint them..

I used some aircraft remover paint stripper, and sprayed the calipers let it sit for a bit then used a wire brush to remove the old paint, it came off pretty easy.. i made sure all of the old paint was off and cleaned the calipers well before repainting, they came out looking great!.

i wouldn't paint over the old paint but i mean it might work out i dunno..

some pics of me painting my old TT brakes, just cause everyone likes threads with pics

just go and get a high heat paint from your auto store and make sure you clean the parts good before spraying. it is all youneed to do. i did mine not long ago and they are still kicking.(DIY)

Think about it this way, would you rather take a little extra time now and get that old paint off or have to repaint them down the road because the old paint is flaking underneath your work?

I was under the impression that if you prep the old paint correctly, or prep it for primer, it would be all good.

...but I'm no paint expert

I just want to get rid of the red, and think stripping it all off and spending $50+ for a paint kit is a little excessive/unnecessary?

You could be fine painting over it but I'd rather not take the chance that the previous paint job wouldn't hold up well and if that paint starts peeling so will your new paint. I'm no expert either tho!

Some cheaper high temp paint will be fine, no need to spend the extra for the caliper paint. I would recommend spraying some high temp clear coat too, it'll give a little extra protection and shine. I've done a couple sets this way and they've held up well.

i have to agree with Paco. plus it really depends on your area you live in. if you go thru all four seasons then you may wanna go ahead and try to remove all the paint. I do a lot of spray paint applications on metal and one thing I have realized is that when you paint something like the calipers that get super hot while driving and then can get cold in winter temps they can flake off. especially if the first layer of paint wasnt done right. I would say scrape it down then spray in light then layers unless you use the G2 paint that you use a brush with. get some high temp caliper paint and a heat gun. after you take the old paint off heat the brakes with the heat gun, spray a light coat the dry it with the heat gun. keep doing this till it covers the whole caliper. take your time and it will look great!
