Default I'm confused on engine mounts

My 02 GS430 is idling a bit rough and is needing both new engine mounts. The dealer told me that the transmission mount is good, but both engine mounts need to be replaced.

Here is my confusion. According to toyotaworld.com's parts data base, there is a front engine mount and there is a rear engine mount. After looking through some threads on this topic in here I have seen where people talk about a driver's side engine mount and a passenger side engine mount...not front and rear, but one on each side rather.

My question is this, am I looking up the wrong parts in the parts database under engine, mounts? Or is this correct, one front engine mount, one rear engine mount?

engine mounts for the gs430 is driver/passenger side oriented.

However the reason why you think that there are front and rear mounts is that they refer to insulators as front and rear oriented. The Engine mounts are driver/passenger just like ElitistK said. Part number for the mounts is 12361-50111.

Do the insulators that you speak of need to be replaced at the same time as doing the engine mounts? According to toyotaworld.com's site, the insulators are only on GS300 models, not the GS430. Is this correct?

Are the engine mounts staggered? Could that be why Lexus/Toyota lists them as front/rear instead of driver/passenger?

You could be right on the insulators being only for a 300 when I did the engine mounts on my car they were not staggered if memory serves me correctly.

Bingo. Just order 2 of these and you're good to go. We have 3 mounts total in our cars: front driver, front passenger, and rear (transmission) mount.

I replaced mine 2-3 years ago and the difference was amazing. Felt like a new car again with absolutely no vibration through the steering wheel, even the infamous clunk you get when you turn on the AC is gone.

Is it odd that the engine mounts are bad, but the transmission mount is still good? I was surprised when the service adviser came back and said only two out of three were bad. It sounds like the rest of you tend to replace all three at the same time. Anyways, I'll have to get these ordered. Thanks for the replies.

It depends what you define as bad. The transmission mount isn't like the front engine mounts where they're filled with hydraulic fluid. If they front mounts leak, you're not going to get much damping. With the transmission mount, it's just a solid piece of rubber that supports the transmission. Worse case scenerio, the rubber will compress. I changed mine out and it didn't really make a difference as far as noise/vibration goes. Definitely don't pay someone else to do it if you can do it yourself because the transmission mount is a piece of cake job.

Around how much would the 2 engine mounts+labor run me? I also have vibration at idle.

Most shop will quote you about 3 hours worth of labor. I've seen variations from 2-4 hours so 3 hours seems reasonable. So who knows...$150-300 for labor?
