Default First things first - my $0.02 worth

FWIW,

Start from scratch before using polishes, etc.

That means...

Clay the car first. It sounds intimitation but it's very easy. Claying will remove any impurities "caught" in the paint including overspray - clear coat or not. Follow the instructions closely - if you drop the clay bar, buy another one.

Claying will make your paint as baby butt smooth as physically possible. After that, use a polish or polish/wax.

I'm not an any particular brand freak and I have about 4x a year to wax/polish my car. Here's my list...

Clay - once when I receive the car and maybe ever one or two years thereafter.

I use a polish/wax made by Eagle One called "Wet Look Polish Wax". This does an excellent job of leveling the paint and protecting. I do this 4x a year - once a quarter.

Each Week: Wash with whatever the cheapest car specific liquid I can find. I then use a detailer mist (Meguiar's, Eagle One or Mother's) after the wash and dry. The detailer helps to hide any spider webbing and small scratches, gives the car a "just waxed" looked and ensures paint protection until my next wax. The detailer takes about 20 minutes to apply and remove.

Good Luck,
Eric
