well i have a 02 gs3 with paddle shifters, what i can tell you is, you need to shift ahead of time when you want to slow down. Don't rush from 5 to 2 at the last minute by spamming the shifter. if you shift late at the last minute, your shake will jerk and shake when you are also braking. You will end up ruining your tranny like this, not soon but slowly.

You can hear the RPMS rise and that is your cue to switch up gears. If your down shifting take your time from 5 down to 2.. IMO i think the buttons are backwards.. "up" should be your thumb and down should be your 1st finger.. I think thats right
I hardly ever drive in M mode but when i do its pretty fun..

This car does have the beeps. I would not suggest using the M mode on this car. The ECU does not blip the throttle to rev match on a downshift. Because of this when you do down shift the engine speed is lower than the drive train speed causing the jerk. When that jerk happens you are putting strain on the driveshafts, and wrecking the gears.

PERFORMANCE: E-shift is the E-ticket. Each arm of the steering wheel has an upshift button on the back and a downshift button facing the driver. They are active only when the gearshift lever is placed in "M", and placed so as to be easily available at any steering angle. Shift speed in manual is as quick as that of a good manual gearbox. The electronic control unit prevents downshifting when the engine would be overrevved in the lower gear, and locks out first gear at all times. These are both good safety and longevity features. With 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque from the 4-cam 4.0-liter V8 engine, sub-6-second 0-to-60 times are the order of the day. Autobahn cruising speeds should be no problem, and variable valve timing makes the GS400 just as well-suited for city commuting. Just put it in "D" and cruise - the 5-speed automatic is one of the best and helps give the GS400 the best of both performance and luxury.
CONCLUSIONS: Few cars combine luxury and serious performance as well as the 1998 Lexus GS400.

It will beep. I don't remember what it is but if your at too high of a RPM or MPH in 3rd it WON'T let you downshift to 2. It doesn't prevent you upshifting? Of course it's not going to let you go from 2 straight to 4. But it doesn't prevent you from shifting up. That doesn't even make sence?

i think what parker means to say is if you are doing 15 in second gear and u click up on the buttons until 5th gear the car will say its in 5th but actually it will not be in 5th gear it will be in 3rd or 4th. Also the car will beep if you try to make a downshift that the car doesnt like.
does anyone know if it is possible to get the engine to rev up on downshifts in anyway?

Manual mode is the best. I've had my GS4 since 06' and I'd say about 90% of the time Im in Manual. Im not sure on the exact speed when you should shift, I just listen and look at the revs. Its pretty quick when in M and showing off at the light. But if you worry about downshifting to fast like going from 5 to 3 when your doing about 90+, dont. The engine takes over and beeps/stays in gear until you reach the right speed. My two cents.
