So far
1) I've replaced the starter relay so I know that's good (goodbye 80 bucks)
2) The starter actually spins free when I turn the key (slight noise, no cranking/catching sounds)

The problem is the starter (near certain now) but how do I get the car to start so I can get it from its garaged spot to the garage now? We're talking at least 10 miles.

Price quotes I've gotten so far
1) 625 from independent (325 parts + 300 labour for 5 hrs)
2) 1300 from a Toyota dealer
3) 1500 from the Lexus dealer

I live in SoCal and the car here been for its entire life so I am guessing the cable is OK.
did you get ur starter tested to make sure.... i ended buying another one bcuz mine click , click, start... then there time... click more then 10 tens and start....well.. installed the new one.. a couple days later, does it again... took the old one to get it check at 2 different places... its work fine.. took another one that i juzt installed and test out good too.... so it be nicer if u know something that will help you take the starter out first and test it b4 buying another one.. but you mite be able to test it on the car too using the tool to do it....u know how dealer are... but its up 2 you... good luck..

I cant get to the starter without taking the intake manifold off. Is there a way to test the starter without that heavy lifting?

That's a big job involving gas and coolant lines. If I had a garage to work in for a couple of days I think I could handle it but I am thinking Im gonna punt in this situation.

In the old days when a starter failed, you could knock it with a hammer to get it to run.

Is there any way to get a knock on the starter for a GS400 w/o taking the intake mani off?

i have this same problem when i put the key in and turn nothing happens completely dead... got a jump and left the cables on i removed the negative cable to see if the would just shut off and it didnt... i was told thats how i test and see if the alternator went bad, drove around for a bit turned the car off turn it back on it was good.. about hours later tried to start the car completely dead again no click no nothing.. im guessing its just the battery... gonna go to sears and buy a new battery and see if this is the issue..

Are you kidding me? If i'm not mistaken or if you're getting more work done or something i've missed altogether, a starter rebuild should cost you no more than $120 - 150 including tax and labor out the door in SoCal. Hopefully you have AAA Plus.

You can test most relays by measuring resistance across the terminals with an Ohmmeter. You'd probably have to look up the procedure in the tech manual (which is in the 2GS Links thread) ... but it could have saved you $80

Looks like a nightmare working on that, the most i ever did was change the oil and i stripped the bolt, and the 30 minute oil change turned into a 7 hour oil change ohh gawd.
