Default Timing belt replacement specialty tools???

I have a 2000 GS300 that I need to replace the timing belt on. Not a big deal for me to do but I found out that two specialty tools are needed for the job. Those tools being a crankshaft pulley holder and a flange holding tool. Does anybody know if these two tools are absolutely necessary or can I improvise with something else?

Thanks in advance

you need a crank pulley puller. i ended up using a 8-10in 3 prong puller.

and a crank pulley holder. basically wedged something on the crank pulley, gunned on what i could (under 100ft lbs), then torque wrenched what i could, then headed to a toyota dealership to get them to torque the rest (paid the tech 30 bucks)

You'll need the tool to hold the crank pulley in place so that you can break loose the bolt. Then depending on the condition of your crank pulley, you might need a puller to remove it. In my case, I didn't need to.

I appreciate both responses. Do I need the part specific tool to hold the crank pulley in place or can I use a chain style holder. Also, will a regular pulley extractor work or will I need the part specific tool?

I used the Schley 64300 to hold the crank. Worked wonderfully, great investment for 55 bucks. I heard of some folks needing a 10 ft pipe to crack the bolt; in my case I was easily able to hold the tool with a ratchet and loosen the bolt with a 25" breaker bar. And I am no muscle man .

For the harmonic balancer, I used the Alltrade kit. It was a real help, my balancer would have never come off without it.

Thanks for the link Lyonkster, the one I would was more expensive. Does anyone know of a way to do this without using the Harmonic Damper Holding Tool?
