Default Gs300 Or Gs400 Or Gs430 for city driving...

which one would you guys go with??? just starting to browse the forum and looking for 2nd Gen GS

Not sure if i want the 6cyl or 8cyl im thinking 6 since ill be in the City quite a bit...
But what would i be missing from the gs430 that doesnt come in the gs400 or gs300...sorry for the rookie questions.
from what ive gathered is the wood trim wheel and taillights and headlights.

Also Saw that i should stick to a gs400/430 since the ball joints, and all the little issues with the gs300..hows gas mileage in comparison to all of them.

1st of all the ball joint issue is in ALL 2 Gen GS's
In the GS430 the only thing you would be missing from the 400 is the Steering wheel shifters. And also some say is SLIGHTLY faster than the 430 in pickup

but aside from that, the 430 is the better car.

I would firstly think the GS300 has better mileage, but i have heard a few people say it gets the same mileage.

hi, welcome to CL.
You should try searching or google as this topic has been covered many times.

Not sure how much you looked into this, but mpg should not be a huge difference between the 8 cylinder and 6 cylinder (due to gearing).

Taillights are interchangable.
All models of 16 GS are affected by the lower ball joints.
Wood trim is different depending on the different editions (ie; SportDesign, Platinum, etc).

wow, this is the nicest post I've made to a new member lol.
but yeah, in conclusion, search noob .

also this might be slightly off topic but yesterday I made a run to Pennsylvania. with my GS400

I've currently got 225 miles at a little over half tank from fill up.
Im thinking I may get another 200 from the remainder.
I will just round it down to about 400 miles for the tank... I don't think thats too bad for a V8...

MPG is basically the same between the i-6 and V8... the 6cyl gets one mile better if im not mistaken... i was in this debate when i bought my GS and ended up with a 430... im glad with my decision...

Grab the 400. You won't regret it.

Take this from an owner of a GS3 who had also driven a GS4 for a few months.... You'll probably get better mileage in the GS4 especially if you live in a town/city where there is a lot of uphill driving involved. I regret getting a GS3; I'm just being honest. I long for the extra power and I would not want you to do the same, but if power isn't a problem, then why does engine size? The GS3 is an excellent platform if you have plans for forced induction as the engine has a massive aftermarket following, otherwise, get the V8.

Balljoints have been an issue in all of the GS trims from 98-00. The issue was resolved in the 01+ cars. If you decide to go with an older GS, just swap out the balljoints yourself if you think you are capable of doing so. It takes like 45 minutes to maybe an hour and a half and will probably only cost you no more than $160.

Headlights were non-green tint in 98-00 models and I believe the switch to the green tint was done in mid-2001. The Sport Design trim has a gray/black-chromish colored housing IIRC.

Basically, all of the aesthetic aspects of the car are interchangeable although some may require some modding/harnesses.

As far as the steering wheel being wood, you can swap out your leather wheel for one. You just have to find a wheel with the same airbag type.

Thank you all of you guys.

Looks like im going to be looking for a gs430 01+ and higher. maybe a gs400, not quite set on it yet.
And im assuming by airbag you mean stage 2 airbag or stage 1 airbag.

^ That is correct, my friend.

The difference between the two chosen cars are the throttle body... One is driven by a cable (GS4) and the GS430 is drive-by-wire (electrical).

The throttle response in the GS4 should be instant whilst the GS430 may have slight lag, but the response time difference is probably milliseconds.

1st of all (as you say) the ball joint issue is NOT with all 2nd gen gs's. its typically for the 1998-2000 as the dealer made a "beefier" ball joint for the 2001 and very few issues of the 2001+ ball joints failing have been reported without some major suspension enhancements. although a ball joint cant wear out on ANY car...it is just a movable item on a car and can wear out

we do get typically the same mileage
