Default Engraved Lock Code

I had a local locksmith that was going to cut the key for my car. He quoted me $50. He tried to cut the key and it wasn't working well... Had to jiggle it. The original key was kinda beat up and worn as hell.

He said that he would need to get the "lock code" which is engraved (4 or 5 digit number) on the passenger side door lock and it would be 50 bucks extra. They needed my VIN number to do it. I told him I would call him back and let him know. So 100 bucks to cut the key.

Is he trying to BS me or is that for real?

I went to the dealer for a second key just to be safe.
They wanted $280 for a new key with remote (unlock, lock, trunk)
& I think it was $140 just key....Don't really remember the price,
but I'm not sure if its a good idea to have some one cut the key.

Then you would never be able to lock the glove box or open the trunk with a valet key!!!

The tag they are refering to is small piece of metal that should have come on the key ring when the car was new. It's obvious you don't have this or you wouldn't have posted. If you want to get a new and dont want to pay $280 you can get one off eBay for like $90 and its usaually $35 to have it cut atleast around here anyway. As long as you have a master key you can copy all of its memory (LPS settings and stuff) on to the new one yourself for free. When I bought my key it came with instructions on how to do it. Lexus wanted $75 to this what a rip off!! You may still run into the same problem as this key will still be cut from the one you that is all beat up.

Yep that code is it, most people end up misplaceing the tag its good to know write down and put in your wallet some where if you ever lock yourself out you or lock the ket inside you can call a locksmith give him the number and he can cut a key before he shows up and tries to slim jim your shizz messing up the inside of the door.

Ok well I got it done and everything is working great. I paid $100 in total for the cutting and the key. No programming needed. I just swapped over the transponder. Just wanted to make sure the code was legit and not a made up story for more money... I'm getting too paranoid these days... haha
