Well, I've fixed cars for years, so here's my two cents.

It's for engine performance. Are you racing? All day? Everywhere you go? 1/4 mile 9 seconds from one light to another? No right? Then, you shouldn't even worry about it.

You won't get a ping/knock. It won't "ruin" your engine. It won't even clog your injectors. This is all speculation, hearsay. Don't listen to all this blah blah blah.

I ran 87 in my last car from 80K to 160K. Got he same gas mileage. You could test it out yourself or listen to everyone else.

actually theres a place in the middle of nowhere just north east (iirc) of Madera, ca that has 93, but to be honest, not sure if its believable lol. MANY years ago there used to be a Chevron around the corner from my house who had 93... but I was too young to drive, so couldnt enjoy it but very true, there are probably like 2 in the whole state (maybe)

Wow, thats horribly wrong! and bad advice... how sad... must be all that top ramen

I've 'tested' it plenty of times in a few of mine and my parents cars, ALL had a difference except my dads work van which showed no difference... however, the 'test' was done while it had a bad o2 sensor, should really isnt a valid 'test'. and if it was all "blah blah blah" then why shouldnt it matter if he raced or not since it doesnt make a difference?

I have used 87/89 octane for many years and havn't had a problem but if you want to have better driving experiance..91 is the way to go...honestly it makes big differance.

True story: My mom's RX300 would have super low idling problem and even shut off right after starting the car. I did all the preventative maintenance even cleaned the MAF sensor etc. I finally narrowed it down to bad gas. I asked my parents if they pump regular or premium I found out that they've been pumping regular. After discovering this I told them to not use regular and only pump premium. It's been over 6months now and they haven't had any issues with low idling since. Proof that the grade of gas can effect your car.
