Thumbs up Preliminary NAV DVD copy findings

Ever since my friend found out he had to pay $$$$ for a NAV update in his 2001 GS430, we have been trying to copy the NAV DVD using a Hitachi DVD drive and Pioneer A04 DVD-R writer. During our first test we used DVD-RW media just to see if it would work and of course it didn’t. Next we tried using a general purpose cheap DVD-R and again the NAV failed to work. Then we brought some Pioneer branded DVD-R media and finally got signs of life on the NAV. The NAV performs erratically for awhile then stops completely. Once we figure out how to split the dual layer DVD onto two DVD-R’s the problem should be solved. Another issue is that when we tried to copy a 2002 RX300’s NAV DVD and put it in the GS it failed. However using that same copy in the 2002 RX300 it worked but again stopped. The latest dvd structure seems to be different from the previous one. It won’t be long till we figure out all these issues and make working copies, its just a matter of splitting the database. On a separate note, I’m taking delivery on a 2001 GS430 that I brought from Manheim Auto Auction on Friday. Wife’s happy about taking the ES so all is well . Will post more info tomorrow guys, stay tuned.

BTW
Anyone in Maryland with DVD NAV and would like to help with testing, please private msg me. I’m limited to working with my friends conflicting schedules.

If it's a dual layer disc and data is all over the place, you can't copy it.

Even if you can, it's illegal.

Yeah, but like bit said ClubLexus can't exactly condone blatantly illegal activities. From a techno-geek perspective I think it's kind of cool to troubleshoot and figure things like this out, but it seems like this goes beyond that.

Sheesh, if your buddy can afford a Lexus (a GS430 no less) I think he can afford the couple hundred bucks (at most) for a DVD nav update.

Default Illegal

And Lexus is really likely to go after a purchaser who has cloned what should be a $50 item.

RIGHT !

True, but the price is more like $500-600, depending on the dealer.

Thumbs up I'm down

Who cares about ethics and how much people make, it is just a way around paying loot for something that is an extra luxury for us GS peeps. Yo, 99LexusGS_300, I am in the Bethesda area and I might be interested in helping out. Hit me at sean_price2000@yahoo.com
