OEM Bumper MOD
Has anyone done this??? I want to cut out the horizontal fiberglass pieces and replace with an inset mesh (black or silver). Afraid of integrity of bumber when done. I figure 6hrs to complete.

roenick - Are you sure that's fiberglass...thought it was polyurethane(sp). Guess it doesn't really matter...in fact, poly might be easier to cut.
Actually think the mod might look pretty good...don't know about the structural integrity.

i say go for it, it'd look a lot better than what it is now. those bars are what i hate, as well as those little drops on either side. the bars only connect the far ends and don't see how integrity could really be an issue. the bottom is not a part of any frame really

Actually roenick, I’ve been thinking about the same thing myself. I’d love for someone else to beat me to it though!
Starting off with a clean slate (the horizontal bars and the supporting vertical slats removed) it opens up a lot of possibilities. For my taste, I’d like to see some general design theme carried over between the grille treatment and the bumper – same mesh, etc. Haven't been serious enough about it yet to search for any other references - but I don't remember of any posts in recent times.
My .35 cents worth.

I've asked a couple of times in the SC forum this same question, but no one seems to know if/how this can be done. I wanted to do this to my '92 SC when I had the original bumper on. Then I got in a wreck and got a '97 bumper instead. I got in another wreck, so that bumper is no good either. (none of the 3 were my fault btw) 
. The bars are definitly urathane (at least on mine) so I was wondering about the integrity as well, especially the bottom. It seems like the mesh (depending on how strong it is and what you use to connect it to your bumper) would maybe hold up the bottom and prevent it from sinking (if it would in fact sink if you cut those cross bars).
But aren't they there for a reason? They either hold up the integrity, or prevent large objects from entering that hole, or both. The cross bars on the GS are smaller in size, and the hole created isn't as big as what would be if I did it to my SC. It doesn't seem that hard to do, just cut with a jig saw, and put something to cover the holes. Now I'm in the process of getting ANOTHER bumper, and really want to cut those cross bars out. I WOULD try it on one of my other bumpers, but they can be sold and fixed by a shop, so I don't want to completly ruin them. If you look in the pic, you can see the smaller supports coming down from the top part of the bumper, and coming up from the bottom to the larger center bar. Mesh would look really good going all the way across I think.

Oh and the middle portion is custom fabricated and was meticulously placed. I can give you some close ups of the job from the front view, but the magic is in how it is mounted to the bumper in the back. I don't have pics of that.

make sure when you do cut out the slats, you don't take off the tabs for the fog light screw. You will see what I mean when you unscrew the foglights.

I cut it out a few hours ago I will upload the photo later. Not as strong as I would like, however with the mesh from RMM on Monday should shear everything up. 30 minutes, fog lights still in.
