I also thought about the E39 BMW vs GS when i bought my car, Of that generation including the E class W210, the GS looks the best and still to this day looks modern, while the E39 and especially the W210 look really dated. I know the GS in stock form is pretty ugly hehe, but when modded and compared to modded E39's, its no contest, the gs looks stunning.

I'm going to guess it doesn't really matter that much to you, but if you find a well-maintained GS, you're sure to get a lot more compliments. My car is a 98 model and I've had people swear up and down it couldn't have been made before 2005.
That's not to say the BMW can't achieve the same thing, but you're less likely to be noticeable to the average person driving down the road, even if you're modified. Yeah, perhaps BMW's have a little more prestige, but in my opinion they're so common that they're boring.

Let me voice my opinion.. I had a 2005 BMW 530i W/ Nav (obviously not the same car.. but I would assume better in some ways) and I currently own a 2002 GS430.. I do have some suspension work done but nothing too major, and I don't regret getting rid of my Bimmer at all.. 1st thing was the maintenance on that car was outrageous.. my A/C stopped working after a year of owning the car.. Airbag sensors had to be changed 3 times, TPMS system was always out of wack, I would have my seat belt on and the damn car kept making that stupid chiming noise... WAY too many electrical problems, its a beautiful car and yes it drove very well and I took very good care of it, but with a little elbow greese in into my GS... i'll never switch back.. def go for that V8 though..you wont regret it
