Default Is it common to smell something when you accelerate hard?

I have read in a couple of threads that a funny smell when accelerating full throttle are symptoms of a catalytic converter going bad...

But none the less, most cars that I have had or driven, have had a weird smell with hard acceleration. Is it because I drive in a city and the exhaust system isn't being blown out the same way a car that is usually on a highway is?

BTW i got a code for my CEL that my cat converter is going bad. But I really want to know if its the Cat converter...
At my mechanic shop, there are a lot of LS' and GS' that have cat converters going bad... I find it weird because most of you on this forum say that a cat should last the lifetime of a car...

my car only has 120k miles on it...

What error codes are you getting? I had a P0420 code. The stealership was very insistent on replacing the converters. It turned out to be the post cat o2 sensor that was getting weak.

When I told the stealership that I had replaced the o2 sensor and that the problem was fixed, they had a very sour look on their face. They wanted the 3000 that was quoted for parts (converter/o2 sensor/labor) when all it took was a 150 dollar o2 Denso sensor.

If you have a scan tool that can read the datastream, you can monitor the voltages for the sensor.

I really forgot what code it was, I was in a rush and I stopped to my mechanic to check what the CEL was for... He just gave me that look like "oh boy here we go"

It is normal to get some smell because when you punch, the car runs a bit rich from the factory so it is normal.

But if the car is throwing a code, follow Percy's advice. If the O2 sensors voltage is not steady, it will throw off the AFRs and you will be running very rich. Goodluck

yea i have seen smoke puffs and smelled some funky stuff when doing hard pulls in my car and with other people's car. One time I was trynna keep up with this Porsche that was like an 05 and when he drove off a small amount of black smoke puffed out and you could smell the oil burning. In case you didnt know oil burns a lot faster when you drive fast. Also ur car isnt exactly a baby so your o2 sensor might be dead thats in front of your cat. GL

I get a smell when I press out on gas... But I though it was my K&N...

Kosi, Hit me up, man I will read the code for you...

Percy, the sensor they replaced is one of your bank 1 sensors, Am I right? I believe that "post" is after the cat and that is (should be) bank 2 sensors...
Altogether, our cars have 4... Bank 1: sensors 1 and 2 (driver/passenger sides) and Bank 2: sensors 1 and 2 (driver/passenger sides). Check this thread out: https://www.clublexus.com/forums/mai...fficiency.html

Edited: The GS300's have 3 o2 sensors...

Yep! Bank 1, sensor 2. Post cat on the drivers side. Was fairly obvious when I hooked up the diagnostic and had the voltage readings from the datastream.
