ok im in the market, im most likely gonna get a 98 GS300, anything i should look for?

the one im looking at has 200k + miles on it, should i do a compression test? what should compression be? how long do these motors usually last if maintained?

200K miles is a lot, but it's not a problem if the vehicle has been maintained regularly. So check maintenance first.

If maintenance is done, the engine would least worry me. Those engines pretty much run forever if look after. Check for oil leaks though. Also check the oil level, if it's too low, chances are the owner didn't really take care of the vehicle.

Other things you should look at:
- transmission: make sure it shifts smoothly and doesn't slip between gears
- equipment: try all the electrical equipment inside the car (windows, roof, aircon, locking mechanism, etc)
- suspension: check whether the lower ball joints have been replaced (weak point)

StewartsGS*
Jersey would be a serious drive for homeboy...

200k is alot of miles, I would recommend having a Lexus dealership do a pre-owned vehicle inspection. The dealership is expensive, but they know what they are looking for and work with our cars all the time. So if the price is right on the car, then I would recommend you tell the owner you will pay for the inspection, but he has to split any small repairs needed for the car. That's what I did, and the owner ended up just taking 2k off the sale price for me instead of paying the dealership to repair, and then I repaired it with my brothers. Best of luck bro, if you have any questions search on here and it can save you alot of time and money.

thanks for the input guys!

yeah jersey is quite a drive for me.

anyways here's pictures of the car, i was able to talk him down to 5k without the rims. the front bumper looks a little funny, looks like the hood is popped, but yeah 200k miles, how much does a dealership charge for the inspection?

If everything is mechanically sound, all you would need is a little TLC for the exterior (new front bumper and hood, polish headlights) and she'll be pretty again. If properly maintained, I think we've had a few members with the 2GS that have clocked over 300k miles. I remember one member had over 300k miles and the exterior and interior looked the car only had 30k miles.

dang. the car seems like it was in a previous accident that shifted the frame or really bad fitment, cross measure the inside of the engine bay (ie: from hood hinge bolt to headlight bolt on opposite side) make sure they're the same! The rear looks bad too, examine sheet metal in spare tire area and quarter panels to look for hammer marks.
For $5k that still seems like alot since it does have 200k+ miles and looks like it'll need paint, but take your time to look at how it was maintained and make your choice based on how much you'll have to spend. There's no point spending money on a car when you could get a better car for the equal amount.

If that's the case, you should ask for more detailed photos of the different areas of the car to make sure the body and frame is straight also.

I've seen much cleaner, even at 200K miles...

I wouldn't make a 4-hour trip for that car. It just looks neglected.

The seller didn't even wash the car before taking the pics...

Granted, it's not a lot of money, but you can get a much cleaner one with less miles for $1,500 more.

This one just doesn't look clean. I would also go with a stock one, especially at this mileage.

Some details on this car just bother me:
- painted the woodtrim on the center console (not on the doors though)
- weatherstrip is coming loose (drivers' door)
- rear bumper & trunklid don't seem aligned
- front bumpers is cracked in the middle
- passenger side fender is damaged (the wheel probably rubs the fender)
- car is slammed, you should change the ball joints

And pictures never show all the defects... But you can always make the 5-hour trip and check it out. May be worth it.
