Default Hollow metal rattling sound in reverse?

Hey guys...I'm wondering if anyone here has had this happen to them. I put my wife's 99 gs400 unti reverse yesterday, and heard a prominent hollow rattling sound (coming from the rear driver's side).

It disappeared completely once I let go of the brake and gave it some throttle. It only happens once every so often...I thought perhaps a loose brake dust shield but it doesn't happen all the time...is the something dreaded like some sort of suspension bushings?

Check the exhaust heat shield. I recently had to have mine cut off because it got so bad.

Wow...is it bad to not have the heat shield there? And this may sound like a stupid question, but is there a heat shield for each exhaust since there is dual exhaust?

If it's easy to get to, perhaps I'll just go in and remove it myself...

You need to check to see if that's your problem first. If so, you then need to identify which one it is. Mine was the one for the mid-pipe and had to be cut off.

OK, newb alert....how do I check it? Can I jack it up and knock on the exhaust to find out if it rattles? That'll be the first thing I do when I get home today...it scared the bejeezus out of me when I first heard it...

good deal...definitely hope it's as simple as that. Thanks so much for your insight! It seems odd though that the rattle only happened with no throttle in reverse.....

It could be that your drive shaft is hitting your exhaust. My s14 used to do that when in reverse

brake shims do not move....I thought it could be the brake assembly, but everything feels secure...since I am a newb...where do I see if the driveshaft is hitting the exhaust? Close to middle of the car underneath? Was your s14 stick or auto? (s14's are soooo much fun to drive.....=)
