Front bumper looks like its peeling!
I went out to run a couple of errands today and noticed I had a bunch of bugs and road crap on the front of my car. I didn't see any time in the near future for a full bath, so I stopped at one of those 'magic wand' spray it yourself places to rinse the bugs off before they made a permanent stain.
As I was spraying the bumper, I noticed a small film (I thought it was a big bug wing at first) flapping in the spray. When I got a closer look, it appears like some of the paint started peeling off with the spray. Obviously I "stopped doing that" and quit spraying (as you can see from the dirt and bugs still on the car in the picture below).
I'm not too PO'd about this as I was planning on getting my hood repainted soon anyway and now I'll just get the entire front clip shot.
Has anyone else had a similar issue? The peel is actually black, and the layer below it is also black (but looks really nice and shiny). I don't have expel. Am I just losing a layer of paint? Can I do anything to stop it or should I go ahead and peel it the first layer off, then wax?

Since "most" black GS's don't have clear coat, I guess it would be actual layers of paint that is coming off there bro. I think so. If that doesn't bother you that much, then yeah, go ahead and wax it. Multiple coats
Also, when you get your hood painted -- ask them for a layer of good ol' clear coat

Dave,
Has your front bumper been repainted? My body shop told me when painting on poly eurathane surface, only the first coat will stick on to the surface. The second coat will stay but not for long. So if repaint the bumper, the correct way to do is to strip down to the raw surface and pain. Never paint it over the existing paint.
I'd think that's what happened to your front bumper.

I'm pretty sure its the original paint on the bumper, no signs of repaint and it's in the condition I'd expect for an original 98 bumper as well.
Marken I'll go look again, but I think the film is actually black (not clear). So that would make it paint.
Jacob - if that's true for the original paint too, then this IS the second coat coming off. After I get the full hood paint scheduled I'll have to expirement and peel off the full layer so we know how/what to expect.
I think one of the lessons learned is... Don't use those high pressure spray wands on your front bumper to get bugs off.

Well, at least you were planning on getting things repainted anyway. Still, I'm sorry to hear about that. I have used those high-pressure washers for years (even when removing Florida love bugs) and have never had a problem like that. The only other thing that's ever worked is that spray can bug/tar remover, but you have to rub like crazy to get that stuff to work. Yuck!

Had the same problem with my front bumper (LS 400) after an accident 3 years ago. Right now I'm waiting for a new bumper (another accident). I was told at Lexus that it is known problem. He said the material is working. I told them to do a good Job!
