Lexus betters have something more powerful to compete with new M5, E55 and RS6.

I don't anticipate Lexus going after that market anytime soon...even if they did, I probably could not afford it

I don't think it's true, but I also don't think it's out of the realm of possibilities. The GS300 outsells the GS430 by a huge margin. I could see them discontinuing the top-of-the-line model for a year until the release of the brand new GS in 2004. Maybe the SportDesign GS300 would be the new top-of-the-line, at least for a year.

Despite all of our reasoning and "common sense" there's a lot more that goes into these kinds of decisions for carmakers. A lot more behind the scenes that we have neither exposure to nor insight into. Again, I don't see it happening, but I wouldn't be shocked...

If the dealer doesn't mark up the price above MSRP, I'd probably be able to afford it. M5 sounds good for me in 4~5 years.

Hmm what i dont get is what is Toyota/Lexus goals for the future. The ES and the RX will no doubt get a v6 3.3 engine. Then Toyota can dump the v6 3.3 engine into the many cars running the v6 setup. But what about the I6 RWD cars from Lexus? I would think a small boost in hp from supercharging or turbocharging wit a lil psi. Then they can compete with the sports sedans. About the 430 series they should pump more hp out of the sucker rather than giving it a new engine. Toyotas/Lexuss future is hard to determine. But if they were to discontinue a series why not just discontinue both 300/400 similar to the sc series of 01. And come back wit 04 wit the new design.

If Lexus do go after the M5, E55, RS6 market with a powerful GS. What should be the reasonable price? We all know that the 540i, and the E430 cost more than the GS430.

The SC400 was discontinued in 2000, SC300 in 2001.

Would it surprise me if they discontinued the GS430 next year? slightly. Is it likely? Doubtful. I would think that someone here on the CL boards would have heard something before any of the dealers.

well that's simple. the gs430 now cost less than 540i and e430, and it's performance is on par or slightly better. if lexus makes one that's on par with m5 and e55 in terms of performance, they just need to price the car at around the level of 540i and e430 (or probably a tad more) and they will eat the market

So simple no one's ever done it.

The M5 has a *5* liter engine. The GS430 has a highly tweaked 4.3L engine and Lexus (unlike BMW) cares about fuel economy and pollution (ULEV). There's no way Lexus is getting 400HP out of the GS430 without supercharging.

Then there's the reliability factor, which, unlike BMW, Lexus cares deeply about. More power means harder to keep reliable.

Even IF Lexus came out with a 400HP GS430, then you guys would start whining that it doesn't have a 6 speed stickshift which about 3 people would buy.

Hard to get very interested in keeping inventory at all the Lexus dealers to sell 277 cars of a certain model in all of North America every thirty days. Every other Lexus model outsells the GS 430. Still don't believe it but it just might be a numbers game.
I think the low sale numbers for GS430 vs. GS300 are due to several factors such as:
1. Assembly line for GS430 is shared with SC430, hence, low production volume.
2. Higher priced than GS300.
3. The only "ready to be delivered" colors for GS430 are silver, black, and white. For any other color you will have to wait for about 2 months or more.

Over the past week or so I saw a new Lexus commercial featuring the GS a couple of times (I live in the Washington DC area). Although the commercial doesn't specify the 430 or the 300, I was happy to see that Lexus is still advertising the car. You wouldn't think that they'd be spending money promoting a model that they're going to discontinue in the near future.

Me too! And that is a very sweet a** comercial indeed. The new one where this "WIND ENTITY" is trying his best to blow the GS off the road..........but 'vvt-i' prevails!
