Default New tires on '99 GS400 0-60 5.27

I could never get the power down to the road with the Michelin tires on our GS; they would just light up and spin. I put a set of Hankook tires on it recently and got 5.27 0-60. About a second better than with the Michelins. (Only performance mod is a SRT air intake and chip.) Curious now what it will do with some power braking off the line. Would be cool to get under 5 but I don't think that is realistic. Heard you can bust the engine mounts power braking so I'll be careful not to over do it. A 265/40/18 tire is only $155. Here is a review on affordable tires. So far the Hakooks have been great!

How are you measuring your 0-60 times?

Ha, ha, ha. Yeah, right. Why the sarcasm? Actually I'm using a 3GS iPhone which has 3 very sensitive accelerometers. The app provides run times, G forces (acceleration, braking and lateral), and wheel HP measurements (assuming you enter the vehicle's weight into the app.) It is very accurate and I have no reason to think it is wrong. It does not rely on the user to stop and start a timer.

I tested it several times on my daily driver which is a 2010 Ford Fusion with an anemic 4 banger in it. The two published 0-60 times I've seen on the Fusion were 8.7 and 8.9. I consistently get between 8.75 and 8.9 using the app.

The 99 GS400 was clocked at 5.4 by Edmunds and 5.9 by MotorTrend who at that time historically did a poor job at getting good 0-60 times. The stock GS400 came with 225/55/16 tires. Mine has 265/40/18 summer performance tires, and the SRT intake and ECU chip combo. If you combine the larger and stickier tires with the extra HP from the SRT, 5.27 seems totally in the ballpark. I would be disappointed if I only got 5.4 and fully expect to get better than 5.27 with a more aggressive launch.

Have you installed so many amps and boom boxes in your GS that it is now so heavy that I can take you on with my Ford Fusion?

For $12.99 it's a killer app. A lot of guys go by the seat of their pants and use their anus to try to figure out if the mods they make to their car improved performance. If you have an iPhone or iTouch you can know for sure if the $$$ you spent made any difference or not. Here are a couple links that describe it:

For the money they sure are hard to beat. I don't think there is anything out there as comfortable and as fast for anything close to what you can buy a GS400 for. I test drove several GS400 before buying ours, and I have to say there was a huge difference in performance among them. Several were slow. So you have to watch out. The iPhone / iTouch app is an excellent tool to use when shopping for a car as you can objectively compare performance from one car to the next without relying on just a seat of your pants impression. If the engine is tired, it should show up in the numbers.

This weekend I want to break below 5.2! (Hopefully I can do it without ripping up my motor mounts.)

As long as we are talking Hankook, I have had them for about six months and I think the noise factor is starting to increase with age. Anyone else notice this or is this just my imagination.

Definitely good value for tires regardless.

You know there's an app for that...
