Here are some stats on the 540i sport http://www.car-stats.com/stats/shows...tsgivenid.aspx I don't think the automatic is a 1.2 sec slower in the 1/4. It says unkown transmission so that could be the auto as far as I know.

Alright. The following data is taken from BMWUSA.com, the official website of BMW.

540i: 6.2 seconds from 0-60
540i 6 speed: 6.0 seconds from 0-60

GS430: 5.8 seconds from 0-60 (taken from Lexus.com)

As you can see, stock to stock, GS430 is faster than 540i 6 speed. My 0-60 is 5.7 seconds when the car was bone stock. My engine is a little bit stronger than the usual I guess.

Wasn't the actual claim fastest AUTOMATIC sedan, and even then only for a month or two before the Jag XJ-R came out?

Not trying to disrespect the GS4--hell, I own one and love mine--but their claim was pretty specific (and short-lived) as I remember.

Default Correct

Fastest auto sedan in the world. Was that way for about 3 months until the supercharged Jag came unto the seen. Regardless of where the numbers come from the GS always has a quicker time. Whether C&D, R&T, or Motor Trend does the testing, the GS is always quicker auto vs auto. This is of course when they do their sedan comparisons, same day, same driver,etc...
So given equal drivers it is safe to say that the GS is quicker than BMW 540.

Well im sorry RA but thats BS my butt-o-meter is one of the most accurate ways to test true performance and get real world figures Lol

Bad,

As you know, butt-o-meter is not as accurate as G-Tech. I took my friend to test out 0-60 on my 430. When the car reached 60 mph, he couldn't even feel it. I quoted his word, "60mph already?" and he looked surprised. When I took a drive in his 328, I felt the "push-into-the seat" kind of feeling but it is slower than my 430 no doubt.

He had Remus carbon fiber exhaust, AEM intake, and maybe Dinan chip (not sure).

My neighbor (coincidentally) has a '99 540i auto. We haven't done a side by side shoot out, but my car definitely feels faster than his. And with my suspension mods I can run circles around him. And what's with the HUGE steering wheel on the 540i? Ick.

But it's still a great car. Oh and his nav system is SO bad he never uses it. And he's had electrical problems (the engine would just die while he was driving!!!!). It seems to be fixed now though (after 3 or 4 visits to the dealer).

Has there ever been a serious study as to whether the size of the Butt makes for a more accurate measurement in acceleration?
Example- Big Butt-more cusion-less feeling-less accurate
Small Butt-Less cusion-more feeling-more accurate.
Hmmm.

PP,

Yeah, I kind of agree with you. If the force is the same, big butt will sense less pressure cuz P (pressure) = F (force)/A (area). Anyway~

I dont know where i saw it, but i coulda sworn i once saw 5.5 seconds for the 540 sport m6. Like everyone has said, i guess it really depends on the driver. The numbers published by both Lexus and BMW are so close, that even the weight of the driver can change everything.

I find it hard to believe that a GS400 "killed" a 540 because according to the manufacturers, there only .2 seconds apart. That is not even a carlength. But I guess in the end, it doesnt matter by how much. Winning is winning.

I think Car and Driver said it best...

"for all intents and purposes, the GS 400 is the performance equal to the 540"

Sup 1SickBuddy!

This topic is very hard to answer, cuz there really is no real answer til you go out and have fun going at it with your neighbor. My neighbor has a 99 GS4 with 17's, spoiler and exhasut. Beauty to look at but won't race me...he says "you did too much to your car already..." I'm trying to take pix with his car lined up face to face with mine one day.

Test drove the GS430 with 17's and I will say that I was impressed with its handling but for some odd reason didn't feel "in touch with the road". Backed off from buying one cuz I heard rumors of redesign, GS500, 6MT, etc, etc. All turned out to be false so now it becomes a waiting game.

IMO, stock vs stock, the GS430 feels like it has a stronger 2nd gear, but the 540i feels it has a stronger 3rd...perhaps the better throttle response feel. All in all, I hope you and your neighbor go out and have fun but stay safe! And let us know the results!

Those Jags are all in repair shops now so the GS has reclaimed the title JK

Anyway, I have a 1-0 against a 6spd 540- its nose was up to my gas cap....0-85.

The thing is if the 540 gets ahead on launch just by a tad, it'll be hard to recover unless you have a real long strip of tarmac ahead in which case you'll get him. But I disagree with the opinion here that BMW is sronger on 3rd gear. I won the race because of the GS's 3rd gear. The 1-2 was almost even between the two cars but the GS' 3rd decided the 540's fate.

Actually, I think the MB CLK55 is the fastest 4-door automatic vehicle. Anyway, I raced my friend's 540i to about 100, and I was half a car in front. Switched with him with me driving, and almost the same result. I think it is close in performance, but the GS edges the 540. Whatever car gets the jump, you will be locked there until you reach 100, and then the GS will slowly pull away. If there are curves in the road, advantage is to BMW, if it is a straight shot, advantage to the GS.

Humble Opinion is based on my experience! lol
