I have a brand new 2002 GS300 as a loaner while my GS430 is being painted. When I step on the gas of this GS300 it lets out a loud roar like it is turbocharged. It is much louder than my GS430 even thought it does not go as fast. My GS430 barely seems to be breaking a sweat but the GS300 seems to be giving all it can. Did Lexus just push this little GS300 engine as far as it goes? Or is it just the Mouse that Roared? I can only imagine if Lexus pushed my GS430 engine the same way.

Yeah, mine seems to wanna rev high. I guess that's why our MPG is pretty much the same (1mpg different). My mom's '98 LS400 is very quiet compared to my GS3 so I know what you're saying.

It's a heavy car for a 3L I6 to drive. If you're used to the V8 and drive the GS300 the same way, it's gonna have to work hard.

you can say that again.. the 2JZ is a true performer and you can really hear it too. The engine is well tuned even form the factory.. it only makes low HP numbers because it is made to be a turbo car and thus the internals are slightly over built... not design for N/A in other words... i love the sound i think it sounds like a well tuned race car!

That's mostly induction noise which is amenable to "tuning", ie it could be quieter, but evidently Lexus wants you to hear it (just as exhaust notes are tuned to get whatever sound the mfgr wants you to hear). My SC3/5 spd was much more musical than the SC4 it replaced.
BTW, turbos will ordinarily function more as an additional muffler since it's using the exhaust flow to spin up and pressurize the intake flow.
