ALL THE GS's are great cars period!
300's are great too they just have less power.
Why do people insist the 400's are better?
400's are awesome but not "better" - no secret there
430's have nicer interior, bigger stroke engine/more power and although is extremely close to the 400 the 430's are newer and are a little more refined.

Nothing is wrong with the '98 GS400, but its the first year and the '98's are somewhat different than the rest. You should know that '98's maintenance comes at earlier intervals like you plugs are changed at 60K instead of 120K and few minor things, etc...
Also, I have several friends with '98 GS400 and they have had several suspension and brake issues when the car was new, a few bugs with the car here and there. I also bought my '99 GS400 brand new and i didn't have any of those bugs and issues..
The original poster asks whats the best year and model.. Just because I didn't include the '98 doesn't mean its a bad year, it just not the best year with some of its bugs and issues IMO..
The 2nd Gen GS is the best Lexus Series ever made in any brand..

The GS300 is an awesome car when I first drove it in 1998, but at that time it wasn't any faster than my Maxima is why I opted to get a GS400. More Power!! But in todays world a GS300 is a slow car and If unmodded, its just an everyday luxury sedan in todays car market.
I have a few friends with GS300s and they wouldn't admit it, well some do, wish they had bought a GS400 instead..
I have a friend with a GS300 Turbo on here and he bought a GS400 and then bought another GS400 Supercharged.. He can tell you GS400's is the "it" car because of the V8's power completes this car performance persona..There is nothing wrong with the GS300 or less of a car, its just less power.. So what is the best model - well according to all criterias associated - the GS400 is the best all around car..(2nd Gen)
