Hi,

I am new in here, I have my year 2000 GS300 for about one month, everything is OK. But ... in the morning when I start cold engine, it first speed to 1800r/m, then slow down to about 1200r/m --- takes 3 mins !

Can someone please let me know it this normal ? anything possible wrong ? any adjustment should do ? how ?

How cold is it outside? Do you keep your car garaged?

If you just let it idle, I would guess it would take quite some time for the engine to heat up. 3 minutes doesn't look that long to me (for idling).

All 3 of my 2GS's did this, for the longest time i thought there was something wrong with my first GS. I took it to the dealer and to every mechanic possible thinking some sensor was bad but its just how they are, Lexus idles real high when on a cold start.

Idk about your gs, but i know my es does the same exact thing and takes bout four minutes and a mile or 2 for it to get up to temperature

normal, cant expect a car to warm up in 2 seconds. Thats why people leave their cars on while they're inside. Hell, it takes 6 cups of water 3 minutes to boil (212*) I can imagine how long 2 gallons of antifreeze to get to running temp.

not only is this normal for the GS's but this is normal for every car that has a MAF sensor on it....its how they program the cars with the ECU.

My SC300 and my GS300 both take awhile to come down from 1500-1800 RPM. If you have thinner oil in the cold (i.e. 0w-30) the idle at start up is even higher. I made the mistake of starting my car once without an oil filter attached. It didn't get oil pressure and was hitting 2400 RPM on start. After adding a filter it was at 2400 until it got oil pressure then settled in around 1800 before warming to ~1K then, down to it's standard RPM at hot of 450-490. In the morning you can check this. When you first start the car, the RPMs start to go up and up for a second, then they come back down sharply. You kinda gotta pay attention to it. They will drop sharply -- you have oil pressure! It's the oil pump dragging the RPM back down. When I use 0w-30 oil, the oil pump doesn't get as much back pressure per flow rate, and the idle is higher. It's odd, and took me some time to figure that out given only the symptoms.

Mine has never idled over approx 1200 rpm when cold. I'm using 5w30 oil. It idles at approx 700 rpm when warm.

That has been normal for a lot of vehicles I've driven. The cat needs to be warmed up for emissions standards and the cold plays a factor in that. I've noticed it with some of my higher compression engines as well.

yea you all complaint about warming s*** when i had my 1976 lancer yes a lancer aka the dodge colt that in it self was like 10min wait on a cold day i use turn it on and run back home get dress that how long it took...
man i miss that car it took like $11 to fill her up

I had a s imilar problem with my G4. If the car takes too long, and doesn't warm up to operating tempreture during cold days, while driving. Its could be a stuck thermostat.
