Default gs300 auto trans problem

gday. my 2001 gs300 has done 240,000k and still drives beautifully. however, in the last 6 months when i come up to a giveway or roundabout where i am required to slow down, then accelerate, there is a "dead" spot where the car sits, then rapidly takes off as the throttle is further depressed. i think it may be tied in somehow to the transmission as i heard a "squeal" from under the bonnet once. can anybody offer a reason for this before i hand it over to the boffins? cheers....

When you say dead spot, is it slipping or does the engine hesitate and stays under like 2 rpms, maybe like if its not down shifting?

Not saying this is the problem, but with that many miles, its a good idea to check your tranny fluid before anything does happen I just changed mine cause I incidentally found that my fluid was brown after i changed it, my tranny patted my back and is strong now

I think he's saying that when he's slowing down, the revs dip a little. When he re-accelerates the tranny does not engage immediately, it 'waits' for the engine to rev a little higher. So when it does engage, it's not very smooth and makes for a faster acceleration.

Agreed. Change the fluid first.

If its the tranny it will either hesitate cause it doesnt down shift so theres not enough air/fuel for the gear that its in so its like in a sense bogging out. but if it isnt engaging, then it would jerk when it did engage.

hard to say whether it is changing down to 1st or not. it seems like it is about to stall, then flies away when i give itmore gas. so i guess it isn't changing down properly? i will book it in for a trans service. cheers.

Try cleaning your mass airflow sensor and throttle body. Might not be the source of the issue, but that's really important when it comes to smooth engine operation.

You also might want to check your accelerator pedal and all that for slack somewhere, that could explain why it suddenly jumps as you press the pedal more.

Theres nothing wrong, I think its just a shock of how much throttle its being given after you slowed down and then accelerated. I think its just one of those weird timing between the stop and go. The reason I say so is cause it happened to me last night and I was reminded that its happened before. When I say shock, I mean you give it throttle as the rpm's slow down then hit it again and does kinda of a 'canceling' kinda of like the engine wasn't done doing what it was before you gave it throttle again. Just like I was saying up top.

Its too early and I can think right LoL, maybe someone else can chime in with proper terminology of what I'm trying to say.

yes mr jokester thats pretty much exactly what it seems like. however, i don't think it should do it. there have been a couple of times where i have released the brake and put the throttle down, momentum has taken me into traffic, and theres nothing. its a little spooky to say the least.

Mass Airflow Sensor - - I had the same issue, replaced the MAF ($85 Autozone) and the car drives like a dream now, no hesitation.

Clean it first. If that doesn't fix it, then you can replace it if you want. No need to throw an extra $75 at it if you can get MAF cleaner and possibly fix it.

It's the red circled part, just unplug it, take it off (only held on with 4 little bolts), and then clean it with some MAF cleaner. You should be able to get it from any auto parts store. And make sure you give it time to dry out before you reinstall it.
