Default ran out of GAS...TWICE!

I have a 99 GS 300 and when the gauge reads about 1/8 of a tank left, the car runs out of gas. What is wrong with my fuel indicating system? Anyway to get it re-calibrated? Much help is appreciated.

hmmm, did your low fuel light lid on when you had 1/4 of gas left? or do you know that its actually low on gas when the light goes on?

can it be the fuel sending unit?

did you change your fuel filter recently? i know mine got kinked up when i was re-installing it and it did the same thing. said i had 1/4 gas but i was already on empty and almost ran out of gas. luckily ny has tons of gas stations near by. after i reinstalled it i was back to normal.

The little level thing in the fuel tank could be caught on something. Give it a look! The DIY is under fuel filter replacement.

Maybe the floater is getting stuck when it gets to a certain level and doesnt keep going down with the fuel. Does it stay at the 1/8th mark for a long time, or does it run completely out of gas as soon as it hits 1/8th?

I am having the same problem with my 99 gs300. Just ran out of gas last night. The low fuel light came on about 5 miles before the car started to die on the highway. The fuel gage still read 1/8 of a tank.

What is confusing me though, is that after I literally coasted up to a gas pump, the car would not take more than 16 gallons of gas?? I was under the impression we had almost a 20 gallon tank on these cars. Could I maybe have a weak fuel pump, or a dirty fuel filter? Or do we just have a small tank in these cars? I just don't wanna get stuck if something is failing. Car has 92k miles btw.

Thanks

Why would you want to wait that long anyways? The gas gauges aren't 100% to start off with, especially the age of the car. Replacing a new fuel sending unit is not worth the money. Just refill the gas early and you will be fine.
