Default Is the shift gate supposed to light up?

Noob question, but this is my first night with the car.

I'm talking about the P, R, D, N, M, 2, 3

Looks like it should....but it doesn't (at night). All my other interior lights are functioning (dash/radio/clock/heated seats/etc).

If so, anyone know what the likely cause/fix is? Blown fuse? Bulb out? Wire disconnected somewhere?

Mine has been burnt out since the day I bought it....Sept of 2008. I looked at a tutorial to replace it and decided it was not worth my time to do it with what's involved. Sounds like you have the same thing going on. If you have time, like to tinker, go ahead and do it. If you're busy, and the last thing you want to do is work on cars, then leave it.

Thanks guys, looks like the bulb can burn out. Gonna try and replace it and hopefully that fixes it:

since i wasn't here for once, who ARE you referring to? you also forget the reverse perspective, noobs sometimes make OG's (not talking about me) not want to participate. we have ALOT of OG'S who lurk now but no longer post....not necessarily cause of the noobs but cause of the way the forum seems to be headed somedays. just a thought, not necessarily right but just a thought

That's subjective at best.

The plus side is that if anyone searches shift gate they'll find my thread and then subsequently the DIY. The DIY referred to it as tranny gear indicator, hence me not being able to find it at first search or two.

Well... with help from the regs I'm sure we're all learning, myself included. I'm just hinking how we are all here to help and learn at the same time. I appreciate everything thing that I've learned about my LS400 and hope to be able to help anybody in return.... even if I have to repeat myself. So here's a stupid question... what's an OP and what's an OG? I searched them both and got 250 threads on each....

As a moderator, I know I'm in the minority here even amongst the moderator team, but I have a question. Since virtually every question related to the 2nd Gen GS has been asked and answered, if everyone simply "Searched" why would we need to keep this forum section open? We could just turn it into an archive. This isn't supposed to be a chat forum, so once all the question are answered there should be no more new posts right? Just asking.

Personally, if I know the answer to a question, I'd rather just help the member out and answer the question, as well as provide links if available.

OP=Original Poster
OG=Original Gangster. Forum slang for a member that has been around a long time and well respected. Nothing to do with being in a gang or anything.
