I believe he had a catastrophic coolant leak, when his coolant hose came off, with complete loss of coolant.
This will kill an engine in minutes...
I for one would like to know the details of the hose failure.
Was it not clamped or was it old.
A photo if it's not to much trouble...

FrankT has it right. I wish I could post pics, the car is in the shop getting a motor in it. Where the upper radiator hose meets the radiator is where the damage occurred. The plastic that the hose clamps too broke off or melted causing the coolant loss.
