hey Mark,

just wanted to know which dealer in ct you took it to? i live in new york and do not really trust Lexus of Manhattan or the one in Brooklyn. i work in Norwalk, CT though; hopefully the dealer you went to is close by. let me know by PM if you can. thanks much.

I just had my steering pretensioner tighten at the dealership. The steering vibration problems seem to be resolved. I love how there is less play in the steering wheel: cool:. My GS even corner much better at high speeds. Talk to the dealership and have do the same to your car--it like night turning into day

just 2 cents.

Would you be able to get me his name so that I can have him do it for me as well. Let me know. I drive up from NYC every morning to work and this shaking gets on my nerve at times. Anyway, hope all is going well. Do you meet up with any of the Club Lexus guys in CT. Maybe we could all meet up after work one day. =)

Thanks.

the highway vibration is finally gone!!!!!

if you changed your rims or tires, you should have a balance job done at Lexus dealer.
Before, i did a balance job at JustTire and Wheel Work, both of them result in vibration on highway(~75 mph)

Finally, i took it to Fremont Lexus dealer, they rebalanced my wheel+tire. (for less than $200), and the vibration was almost gone. (i think my tire should be accounted for the 'minor' vibration)
the bottom line -- if you haven't done this, have your rim/tires balanced properly at the dealer.
you should notice some major difference.

cheers,

I got my hands on the ST003-R equal, the CP-8007 Dated June 98 ' Steering Flutter' and what to do to fix.

It details the following checks:

1. Check tyre radial runout, max 1.4mm, if not fixed:
2. Check unbalance with an on-car balancer, if not fixed:
3. Replace steering rack guide, if not fixed:
4. Adjust steering pre-load (1.9Nm), if not fixed:
5. Replace steering rack grommet.

* Must be done with warm tyres *

If anybody needs any other values or part numbers, just ask

Just wanted to bring this back to life. The next to the last post has the TSB listed, so if you're having this problem, give the dealer this info so they can lookup the information.

I thought you can only tighten up the rack on a 98??
How do you do this if it applies for 99 GS3's?

I believe it is all GS's from mid-98 on that have this rack. The TSB also states the VIN range, all LHD VIN's from JZS160-0017502->ON have the newer style rack, but as always double check by getting on your knees!!!

Thats what my dealer told me when I kept bugging him about tightening mine. He said that adjustment was for certain 98 models only.

Look under the car behind the driverside wheel and look to see if your steering rack looks like this:

If it does, go get it tightened.

What it simply does is pretensions a spring that pushes against the main rack to increase the resistance to turn it. If it is too loose you need next to no force to turn the wheel. If its too tight your steering will be very stiff and will not self-center at any speed.

I have it that it is as tight as it can go but will autocenter

That's what I thought as well too (it only goes for 98's)?
