Default Wow i had to pay $600 at the dmv!!

So im a new 1998 gs400 owner and i went today to register/change the title to
my name and they charged me $601.What a party foul i live in CA and i was also late to transfer the title so that was a extra $100 so it would of originally been 5.So has anyone else got waxed at the dmv?I feel like i got ripped. P.S i also
put that i paid $3000 for the car so if any new owners need to do this u should put a lower amount because it might of been cheaper.

Yep. Even in Texas they do that also. I tried saying I paid 3,500 for mine when I bought my GS and the lady told me "Well this is the bluebook on this blah blah blah.." Ended up paying around $400 to transfer my title.

wow, I really don't know what I'd do if they told me to fork out 6 bones at the dmv. I paid $200 in transfer.

I believe in VA, if you have a bill of sale signed by both parties with the sale price documented they have to go by that. If you do not have a documented sales price and you try to fudge it, they will just go to the KBB.

I purchased an Integra Type-R a few years ago for way below KBB because it needed some serious repairs. I had to have the bill of sale notarized by a notary of the public to validate the sale price because it was so much lower than the KBB value.

It has always been like that in CA until recently. You go in with your bill of sale and you pay the fees based on the amount listed on the paper. Of course CA is in a crap hole so they got to find any possible way to squeeze out money from you.

I don't understand how in some states they can say they are going to charge you based on the KBB. Then again, same thing applies with homes, if you buy one for way under market value, they charge you market value for it. I think it's completely unfair to be charged for what you DIDN'T pay. Of course most folks who buy used cars always put a lower figure on the bill of sale for a car, but when you think about it, why the hell should you have to pay a tax on a used item which you buy offhand? If that's the case aren't most folks on craigslist then breaking the law? Or is it the fact the car is something you claim as property?

My guess is that it's easier to keep track of cars since they need to be registered. Plus the value of your car, even if it's the most beat up, is worth more than a 6 years old toaster on Craigslist.

Yep. I got owned by the Texas DMV for my GS 3 years ago. I paid almost $600 to register the car. I remember before they went off KBB prices. I bought a Civic hatch and I told them I paid $500 for the car. Got it registered for $50!

What difference does it make to the government the value of your car? They don't have any ownership of it? It's not like your land which is owned by the govt' and you're just paying rent (property tax) on it. Isn't there a state which charges a low flat rate fee to register your car? I swear I remember hearing about that. Either way, it should be like that for every state.

I just did a transfer and registration on another car from Oregon. It didn't have an "amount sold" on the title so the clerk ask how much I paid, I said $500 and I was taxed accordingly. KBB is actually much much more, but I didn't complain. This was last Jan. 2011
