Default Rear main seal leak

So ever since I bought our 2000 GS300 it has leaked oil from the rear main seal. I keep an eye on the oil and add accordingly. Does anyone know of a way to change the seal without removing the tranny? My neighbor says he has done it on older cars without removing the tranny completely. I don't think thats possible. Any thoughts?

I'm having the same issue, luckily I have a Lexus technician as a friend. He's doing mine next weekend for 150.00+parts. Also installing my BC coils

Thats pretty awsome. I would pay that much to have it replaced.

It's only awesome, when he can find free time to do it. It's been leaking for 4000+ miles

Remove it without taking off the tranny????? That's like trying to brush your teeth without opening your mouth.

Keep me posted, I always like to learn something new.

Drop the tranny and be done with it.

Does your neighbor think every car is the same?

Unless he's done it on this particular car, or at least a sibling platform, I think someone making broad generalizations about car repair reveals their ignorance of automotive technology.

A modern service tech, for any car, always pull up the repair instructions to review it, not just wing it. Even for an oil change, they bring it up to confirm that he's pulling the right plug.

I personally don't know, but I'd still want someone competent to do the repair. In other words they've done this specific repair before, or they'll smart enough to follow the repair instructions. If they have done this a zillion times and figured out a way to do able to do it efficiently, more power to them. They've earned whatever they've saved over the book hours.

Being a dentist that analogy is even funnier to me. LOL.

best bet is to take it to a reputable mech to drop the tranny and replace the seal. since they are doing that might as well replace the tranny mount as well.

The rear main seal is located between the engine and the transmission. Good luck getting it out without removing the transmission.

You don't have to remove the transmission. Remove the engine instead! Then again you're adding 342 more steps than necessary

Tranny, torque converter, flexplate.. Yep gotta come off...

Where in Florida you're. I have a good mechanic to work even in the toyota and lexus dealer here in Orlando and now has his own workshop. It is very responsible with the work he does to his client and he takes off the tranny to the car to change the rear seal. Not like some neighbors. LOL It's the first time I read such nonsense. It costs no choice but to laugh at that.
