Engine sounds like a truck... what gives?
I want to know what causes this sound when I accelerate from a stop and the echo from another vehicle bounces back to me
My mechanic says that its the pistons trying to move up and down but in the process while going up, they are hitting on the walls back and forth.
It really sounds like some Nissan Maximas, and
Crown Victorias/Mercury Marquis/ Lincoln Towncars.
Just like a diesel engine when I first accelerate. It kind of pisses me off
Is there anything that can be done about this? Is there damage down the line that comes with this?
I haven't seen another GS400 that does this. When they pull off, it just seems very smooth. Although my brother says that sometimes he notices it with his LS430
We both use 93 octane all the way and also use BP .
Anyone else experiences this?

I have been meaning to post a video of this and finally got a chance to shoot some with my phone. Its not the best quality but the best I could do.
The sound is most consistent at 1200 RPM which coincidentally is the optimal cruising RPM around the city when the car sets into the 5th gear. So there is no way to really beat this thing unless I keep the car at 2K RPM which would cause me to burn more brakes....

Thats really bad. I wouldn't drive the car unless you plan to replace that motor -- something is loose inside your motor -- although it could be a crack in your headers/exhaust?
I'd drop it off at lexus -- pay the $100 diag fee and let them double check the entire car.
My gs4 sounds nothing like that.

The thing with my car is that it isnt heard while car is idling while in park or even drive. Ive been trying to get my mechanic to hear the noise but for some reason he doesn't hear it while test driving. The car tends to behave when he drives whenever i have a problem.
I only heard one other gs4 make that sound when he accelerated from a stop. I have a real issue with this and i would hate to have to replace an engine....
Ive done some research on piston slap and most say its harmless to the engine but im not so sure if im comfortable cruising around town with everyone looking around to see whats that noise....
And yes vwynn its new york city id have to wear out a lotta brake pads with the stop and go accelerating to at least 2k rpms and not to mention fuel also.

I had that same type of sound and thought it was that I threw a rod. But actually it was this item. The pulley located right above the crank. It used to be used for the fan system on older GS's but now is just a pulley to route the accessory belt. I'll post a pic when I get a chance
the best way to check is remove the accessory belt and see if it rotates smoothly. If not, you need to replace it. It was kinda scary for me when this happened because I just came off a slight hard run on boost and the sound came on. Thankfully it was just this.
