Default A few pics of my install in progress

Just thought i would pop up a few pics of the system im putting in my GS430.
As its a daily and im really not wanting to spend much money on the audio im using stuff that i have lying around so you will see some older stuff in here and some newer.

The result of the first box i have built are not as good as i was hoping for as it was a little bit of experimental go so i will be redoing the box shortly. Im also not sure how much boot space i want to give up so the next one may well end up being a simple single 12 but im still not sure.

Im rushing this a bit as i got fed up driving cars in bits so have tried to keep it in a fairly decent state.

Anyway enough talking and heres a few pics.

First up was to prep the shell so i went from this

To this

Doors also got done as did roof lining etc.

I thought i would try the mids without the holes sealed but if i do seal them up i will make inserts to fit rather than just slap some flimsy sound damping over them.

I also then treated the insides of the door panels to some insulating foam to keep out some further road noise.

Next up i made the front and rear speaker mounts.

As im not really interested in rears (this will be the first car i have actually HAD rear speakers in for some time) i went for 5" coax's in the rear.

I also wanted to keep the crossovers dryside so recessed them into the mounts to get the required clearance to the door panel.

All the screw mounts were recessed so that i could use the orignal mounting hardware.

The front mounts were a little more complex to make having different levels to them.

Firstly i got the shape correct.

Then cut the hole for the speaker and added a piece to ensure it cleared the window and drilled the mounting holes.

I then added a piece to ensure that the top mounting screw location was tight to the panel and shaped it to fit below the door control module.

I then test fitted the door panel back on and noted a few places where it touched the baffle so out with the router again and made some adjustments to ensure it all cleared ok.

Finally i recessed the speaker into it painted it and put the gasket on and mounted it.

Next up was the enclosure.

I had 2 Kicker L7's so thought i would try them and fire up through the shelf.

All painted up and glassed ready for the subs

And mounted in the boot with amp rack hinged panel made.

And finally the amps mounted and wired.

And showing that i still have full access to the spare wheel.

Results from this enclosure are that i have a huge amount od low end but its nowhere near tight enought for my liking.
This is a little odd as normally these subs like a little bit of front loading.
I think the problem is the enclosure is not fully sealed to the rear shelf ( i was rushing and lazy) so im getting some fairly huge cancellation at higher frequencies. This was borne out when i wedged some dense foam between the top of the enclosure and the shelf which helped matters considerably.

Im fairly certain that by sealing it to the shelf (this was the original plan and the reason the hole in the top of the box exactly matches the size and location in the rear deck) but since fitting this and the amps im having second thoughts about whether i want to lose this much boot space.

I now have 3 options.

Finish this box and seal to the shelf and finish the trim panels for the boot (or should i say start them lol)

Fit my solo classic 12 in a sealed enclosure suspended under the shelf (most space efficient)

Fit the SOLO X 12 that i have here along with the ZX2500.1 and say to hell with boot space lol.

I doubt i will do it as i really dont want to get into a major install with this car but if i did fit the SOLO X then i would probably cut the rear deck out and remake the parcel shelf and seal the enclosure under there.

If i didnt have the race car eating up my time and money then i might do it but for now the solo classic is looking a good bet.

Anyway thats it so far and i will update with any more developments but all comments and opinions would be more than welcome.

BTW im keeping the oe navi so am just trying out some different options of signal processing but theres not really much to see there at the moment.

Cheers

Nath

Very nice work man, love the attention to detail. It's obvious you like good sound and take the time to do the install right the first time around.
