I had silver tsuna, it literally fell out of the cheap metal things that i was glued too. lol so now all i got is a pink fusa with the kiku knot that TLW sent me as a gift for my daughter

Considering where Junction Produce started (Kawachi-Nagano, Osaka I think), I would assume the fusa is rooted from the 'danjiri' festival...video probably explains it better.

notice the huge fusa on the back of the cart. Also translation of 'fusa' (総) is 'tassle'. Never heard of a relationship between buddhism but hey, who knows.

also, for tsuna, I don't know in-depth about Japanese and Shinto except from what I grew up with, but the roots of those tsuna are from traditional Japanese belief that any natural thing (let it be a rock, river, etc) has a soul. The proper name is actually shime-nawa (注連縄.... or sometimes written as 〆縄), it's commonly referred to as a tsuna b/c is more a common name that refers to a large rope. The Japanese use them to put on those natural things as a protector of gateway to and from the 'other world'.

Now, why and how did fusa and tsuna make it to cars? I have no idea. Fusa, I can kinda see it b/c they are used for those big floats to make them stand out more. For tsuna, the only tradition I can think of is that we put them in front of our cars only around new years (the dates vary by area).

Like I said, I would assume JP is heavily influenced by Kawachi-Nagano, probably one of the roughest area of Japan, where there are a lot of thugs who do yakuzas' work... and yakuzas seem to be more ethnocentric. So that could be why JP puts so much emphasis on traditional Japanese montage.

Just my guess.
