er.... what? My statement is correct. There is no difference between 5w-30 and 10w-30 at operating temperature. A XXw-30 weight oil is the same viscosity at 100C whether it's a 0w-30,5w-30 and 10w-30. See this link: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/viscosity-charts/ You will note that no distinction is made between whatever winter rating an oil as and it's operating viscosity. If the knocking or pinging is heard when the engine is warmed up, an oil change from 5w-30 to 10w-30 will have no effect. My statement is correct.

Changing 5w-30/10w-30 may have an effect, but if I were in your shoes, I'd explore switching brands first. I personally have not been too impressed with Mobil1 in my gs300 (some consumption).

Give it a try, I am not recommending any boutique expensive exotic oil, just whatever you see on sale pennzoil/shell/whatever.
What exactly about going to a 10w-30 from a 5w-30 would resolve an engine noise?

I use M1 5w - 20 full synthetic with Toyota filter. Car has 185k miles. I changed the valve cover gaskets a couple of months ago and was surprised (no shocked) at how clean the top of the engine was; absolutely no sludge and virtually no buildup.

Question - I see where a number of you say you have used the same oil since you've had your cars and that it works great. I am not doubting that it does work great for you. But, how do you know if you've only used one oil? Where is the basis for comparison? Just food for thought.

What did you find in your oil filter? I have been using RP for over 6 years on my modded GS4 that I drive in a very "spirited" manner. The car drives perfect with 132k miles now on the ODO.

this thread should be renamed "what swill do you pour into your engine" considering you're all using junk oils.

M1 High Mileage with OEM Toyota filter. M1 has done me wonders in all my cars. I recommenced amsoil if you have a un-naturally aspirated engine.

Oh wise one, what should your car feel like with "real" oil versus the so to speak "crap" that we're using?

I have no problems with my car regarding sludge or burning oil and I have 132k miles on it. So, you can't say it reduces the life of your engine.

Let us know and be really convincing, maybe we'll switch.
