Default ARGHHH! $700+ to fix steering wheel vibration. 2 questions

Well I went in to Lexus to ask about the vibration. (I just installed my bilstein/H&R and the vibration got worse.) The guy knew abouth the TSB. Its more then just tightening the pretensioner....it involves changing bushings and other stuff. It takes 5.7 hours plus parts. My car is out of warranty. I asked to just tighten the steering pretensioner but he said the Lexus sign out front means he has to do the whole thing. He did give me a copy of the TSB which has the steps to do the fix.

2Questions

1) Has anyone been to a lexus dealer that JUST tightens the pretensioner?
2) If I bought the extended warranty, would I be able to take my car in and have this fixed for free. How much is it to purchase the extended warranty?

I'm about to ask my Lexus dealer to just tighten the pretensioner since he couldn't mimic the problem I've had since day one, however, I want to bring as much ammunition to have him do so.

Is there any way you could post the 5.7 hrs. described in the TSB?

Hmm do u still have the stock tires? I had the 60mph + vibration too, as soon as I got new tires, the vibration was long gone.

I have the actual Lexus TSB. The hours however were in a different book that I did see. TSB# STOO3-98 for 98 GS300/400 sent out June 5th 1998
It is the worst at about 75MPH and goes away when faster

Does anybody know about getting a lexus extended warranty

Hi

My SC300 vibrates right at 61 MPH (slight rattles felt through the steering wheel). one guy i know said it has to do with having the tires balanced properly. he told Lexus dealers use something called 'dynamic tire balancing machine' and it should fix the problem. what do you guys think?

sman....

yeah, traditiionally, that is usually where thr problem exists...tyres are not balanced properly...however, we have several cl guys who tried everything, including using speed balancing as you mentioned and still did not solve the problem..but, who knows, may be yours will be solved by a simple tyre balancing act....

this is why cl has been so great...car dudes can discuss their cars and benefit from one another....i had mine balanced twice and the vibration was still there until my tech guys tightened the pretensioner....then again, he did mentioned that such may not work for everyone.....not sure about the sc, but the gs steering is quite sensative...
