When I did it, it had nothing to do with copying the Benz; and I doubt Mercedes was the first company to do it either way but who knows... lt looks awesome to me and that's all that matters; and yeah, paint over vinyl.

Since I painted it myself it didn't cost me a lot, all together I think I have about $1000 in paint mainly due to the high cost of diamond white but I think I did a better job and took more care than a paint shop would have.
The black paint is a standard jet black basecoat with clear coat on top so nothing really special, any automotive paint store could sell you some.
I used a sata 3000 spray gun that I've had for years from when I used to paint cars for a living. I was able to use a friends paint booth so that helped a lot.
I had no intention of copying a Benz and definitely not a kia but I understand what you're saying about it looking similar. I personally think it makes the car and the main color stand out more so that's why I did it.
I have nothing against vinyl but I have no intention of changing it back and black paint costs less than vinyl anyway.

Ohhhhh, is that how you do it ?!?! i've seen GS's with black roofs before but I always thought it was either a special custom cover or something similar. Looks aight, maybe bcuz to shinny compared to the rest of the car. Keep modding !!
