Default Double Din Install

Ok, so i bought the unit and the harness from the stereo shop today. The guy told me it is NOT easy to bypass the factory amp, that it is a lengthy process using voltmeters and other audio equipment to do this.

To my understanding, i though you just bypass the amp using the NEW HARNESS

After searching around the forum a bit for threads on other installs, and people who have installed an aftermarket HU bypassing the factory amp, i have come to the conclusion that i am correct, and there is no lenghty process behind it.

Does this guy at the shop just want to bang me for the $$$ to install, or is there any truth behind it. although all other threads i have read contridict what the shop said, i am feeling hesitant putting this is.

That's what I thought...it makes sense being the amp is not wireless, it is hardwired.

Thanks!!!!

Maybe he was thinking of the nav units. There are no harnesses for ML nav cars so you have to custom wire everything... now whether or not that is hard is subject to speculation... It took me about 15 min

There's no harness that I know of that will bypass the factory amp. If you can get one or know of one please let me know.

thanks pal!

the only issue i think im going to come across is bypassing the limited functionality while driving (typing in addresses, watching dvd's). I was reading that the new dd hu's are not like the old ones where you just ground out the wire that goes to the e-brake. The newer ones have gyro sensors so it knows when the car is in motion.

a couple of people told me there is an excellent youtube video showing what you have to do with the harness (removing pins and re-placing them). im going to do a search and see if i think i can swing doing this myself lol

The factory amp is located under the glove box. There is no actual bypass harness made by metra or any other that I know of. If your installer is any good he can do this. The speaker wires have to be tapped at the out point of the amp. My Avic has been in for two years now, and going strong.
