This happened to me a while back. Take the steering collumn apart (cover behind steering wheel, and i think the upper part of the foot pannel), whip it down and regrease it. I think i remember pulling the motor out too and regreasing it. It wasnt that bad, probably a 10 minute job. I used lithium grease spray. For mines the old grease started to harden and wouldnt let it move.

Does the grease job make the wheel motor movement quieter?

I changed my battery and it immediately fixed the problem. The wheel wouldn't go all the way down before. Sounds weird, I know. Just my experience.

Once the steering column shell is off, you need to remove the silver motor, it's tube looking closest to the dash, but on the column. Take it out, clean and regrease it. The copper contacts are more than likely filthy and full of gunk. It's fun and easy.

Do you have any pics, or is it all pretty obvious to the casual observer?

It looks something like this. **NOTE** this is just a generic pic. I'm not sure what model Lexus this is from, however they all appear to be similar.

I definitely need to regrease the steering wheel. Mine makes this hideous noise sometimes. I was always too much of a punk to take it apart though. I think Ill have at it now though.

Thanks for the pic. I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend. Hopefully the screws come out OK. I have tried removing a window regulator motor on a 1994 Toyota Camry and it was impossible to remove the screws without stripping the heads.
