Question GS400, or some other car? I need help, urgent.

Hey, well first off I should introduce myself, I'm Ivan, 17, from So. Cal.
I looked to this forum for help on a decision I need to make in a few days, my dad is willing to give me his 2000 GS400, or buy me another car. I love the GS4, I love everything about it, but the issue is the mileage. The meter reads 230k miles. That's quite some, and I'm afraid that if I get the car, parts are going to start needing replacement, and I just don't have the money for them, starting college and all. Should I keep the GS400? Is it worth it? Or should I get some other car?

Keep the GS 400 you will enjoy it....as long as you maintain it (oil change) and check your fluids you will be fine for about 100k miles more...

What about timing belt I think it's pretty worn out, and the ac doesn't work either, so that's something I'm gunna have to deal with.

Do you have any ideas of what's wrong with the ac? I turn it on and all it does is blow warm air.

Tell your dad that buying another car that's going to be reliable for his college bound son is definitely going to cost more than what he is going to get for a trade in and that he should fix all the issues the GS has, and get it maybe some new tires and a tune up before he hands it off to you. Problem solved.

If he is too cheap or careless...take it and while it is still under his insurance...crash it into your house and collect the insurance.

I wish you were close to MN so you can buy my 93 Honda Del Sol Si....MINT!!!! w/94k and stock. I just got a Gs400 and both cars gotta be in the garage. My Gs400 is taking my dads garage spot right now and I can tell he's not that happy so the Del Sol gotta go.

...but ohwel, If I were you I'd rather fix that GS up and drive. No payments to make. Gas mileage wise - just think of it as you dont have to spend money to buy a car aka saving thousands of dollars.

I would have it serviced to find out all that is wrong with it and maybe it needs only a k or 2 to get it into good shape, thats cheaper than a new car. I have a 98 GS400 W/ 196K and an 04 GS430 w/115k both run great and with this site you can most likely find parts you might need. But, you need to take care of whatever car you get - maintenance is key! good luck in college.

How about he gives you the car and a few hundred dollars on top of it for parts and you decide what you need to fix. This way you will be on the thinking chair and get to choose whats needed most. e.g. Timing belt vs AC. etc.. This is a good learning experience because it lets you decide how you want to spend the money. Priorities vs luxuries.

This happened to me when i was your age. Got a 92 SC400 for free from my uncle and it had a WORLD of problems. Dad gave me about $800 or so bucks to use to fix and i spent extra money to put into mods n what not. Car got me to school and home no problem, granted i didnt have AC and the windows didnt work... add that with 100 degree weather...

something WILL be needing to replace whenever you get a used car. Nothing is free .

just put some hard work and dedication and youll be golden. Plus it'll feel good knowing you fixed your own car.

I would take a FREE high mileage, running condition car anyday over car payments.
