Unhappy This ever happen to you???

I got home last night, parked my GS in the garage and didn't lock it. I get down there this morning..., zip... dead battery. FYI, I always keep my lights on auto and I think (not sure) this happened one other time. Reason I say I think is because it was a long time between drives, but this time it was just overnight.

Anyway is it possible the AUTO off lights didn't go off...I know, I know they go off when you lock the doors, but AUTO is AUTO and they are supposed to shut off after a little bit. I don't normally get into the habit of locking my car doors in my own house.

I thought I remebered back in 98/99 there was a recall/TSB on this, but I have a 2000.

Any input is appreciated.

Johnny,

You need a new battery. I believe you're still on stock battery. Those stock batteries just don't last more than 2 year. Get a Optima red/yellow and have a peace in mind. You'll never have to worry about dead battery any more.

I swapped out my stock battery last year even though it's still functioning

Default Been there done that

Jacob,

thanks, but I do have a new Yellow Top in there already. I also heard that about the factory batteries. The dealership was PO'd (not really, but you know what I mean) at me for buying the YT, since the old one was still under warranty.

Hey Johnny,

You probably do need a new battery. Whether you're in the auto setting or normal, when you take the key out of the ignition and open the driver's door the lights are supposed to turn. This feature has been with Toyota/Lexus for at least 15 years or more as far as I know.

more than likely, you dint close your door completely. if it isnt fully closed, the lights wont turn off. and since you have the lights on auto, you wouldnt have noticed that the lights were not turning off after you went in the house. wanna ask me how i know this?

Default listen to the DR.

The door ajar switch on the Lexus series means the door must be fully closed. I have developed the habit of locking the car even inside the garage so that reassuring beep tells me that some other "party" hasn't left a door ajar.

Default Hmmmm

The door ajar thing may have been it, I don't remember when I opened the door this morning. Oh well, I'll leave it on the charger overnight and it should be fine tomorrow.

this will also be the case if you leave the trunk open.
I did this but lucky me came back down to toss the garbage an hour later.

Johnny, I see you been having some problems. I thought that battery of yours was supposed to be no joke? Well, at least you weren't stuck out somewhere..

I thought so too, but with headlights and interior lights on for 14 hours it probably hurt it a little bit. I used to keep my radio going on my boat for like 8-10 hours at a clip, but a) I don't think that draws as much power, and b) I had dual batteries in my boat. I did confirm when I got home it was the trunk, and I put my charger on it so I should be good to go now.
